Problems on Vista Premium

I'm not sure if this has been covered before, in previous threads, but here goes.

Over the last few days I've experienced weird things on Vista. My version is Ultimate. Use a Dell quad processor, 4 GB ram.

When I click on a desk top icon, nothing happens. This is after using the computer successfully maybe just an hour previously.

If I go into start menu-all programs and click on one, nothing. If I click task manager, nothing and I cant reboot using start-shut down or restart.

I have to manually close down the computer, i.e. unplug mains power, re-plug and re-start the box. Everything is then fine-for a while, but sure enough, it starts all over again, maybe 24 maybe 48hrs later. It's happened about three/four times in the last week. There's obviously some app either not working or having a fit of some kind.

Any ideas where to go? A caution. As I've mentioned before I'm no expert on these things, so Primer One advice level PLEASE:D

sounds uspiciously like a sleep/hibernation problem. Laptop or desktop? 32bit or 64?

do you use auto hide task bar?

Never use these commands. It's a desktop (never mentioned that, as I've never seen a laptop in a quad config. down here (NZ). 32 bit. Don't auto hide taskbar ( I think). I mean I just right click on the bar at the bottom and up pops the window. Taskbar is locked.

Run a full system scan with malwarebytes and superantispyware. Then run these commands in an elevated command prompt. Open up the start menu, type cmd, then press ctrl+shift+enter at once. Then enter the following commands, pressing enter after each one:

driverquery /v > %temp%\drivers1.txt

driverquery /si >> %temp%\drivers1.txt & start notepad %temp%\drivers1.txt

Then save the notepad file and upload it.

I use Avira (paid) for main security. In addition update daily and scan every 48 hrs with
Ad Aware, Malwarebtyes, Iobit Security, Super AntiSpyware and Threatfire. Also scan once, twice a week with Dr Webb. There is, to the best of my knowledge, no security problem on the computer. Ran the two scans you suggested-nothing on the disk. Because I'm a novice with computers, I need to know purpose of this suggestion, especially since there appears to be nothing on my hard drive in the way of viral infections/malwares etc :

That is to see what drivers you have and if they are outdated. A weekly full system scan is enough. Also, uninstall Iobit System Security, Ad-Aware and SuperAntispyware. You don't need that many apps, and they are probably conflicting with Avira, especially, Iobit and Ad-aware.

Maybe help you help me more, it crashed again this morning. I got the following messages from some of the icons I attempted to open:

Cannot Find.
Failed to register.
Cannot initialize due to lack of memory module (This was Opera).
Google Chrome has crashed.
Cannot open. Create new?

Interestingly enough, this time I was able to access Start Menu shut down options and restarted in normal way.

This confirm you think the problem is in the drivers?

I'd say its the security and its choking your pc. Uninstall all the apps I mentioned - Iobit, Ad-aware, and SAS. Then reboot and run the driver query.
