odd disk activity after boot up

Hi All
I am running Ultimate on a dual quad core Xeon machine, and have it pretty well cleaned up. Killed Superfetch, a ton of startup services, cleaned up, chldsk and defrag disk and same with reg. Boot up is fast as is shutdown, and overall performance is good.
About 30-60 seconds after boot-up, there is a lot of disk activity, and I cannot access anything, not even context menus on the task bar. I had process monitor up with disk read and writes, but nothing showed up, and the boot-up log looks OK.
At the end of the activity, I hear a sound similar to a USB device plug in.
I think this happened with an update (SP2?) or a performance run in Tuneup Utilities.
Any thoughts? I put System Restore on a once a day calander, and went thru the entire task scheduler and killed most everything. This was done before the odd behavior, and the machine has been running well for 8 months prior.
Thanks
Joe

Can you snip msconfig so we can see startup?

Can you also examine processes, sort on CPU, and let us know the top three?

What are you using for virus scanner? did you do a full scan?

What are you using for malware? If nothing, install malwarebytes and run.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for input
Running Kaspersky with full scan done, running malwarebytes, top 3 system idle, taskmgr (obvious) 3d changes around and is minimal.
How do I snip the msconfig window?
Not running a pagefile (20GB memory)
Thanks
Joe

sniping tool is built into vista Just type snipping tool in search and attach the snip by using the attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form

hope this helps

Kill popup and setpoint. Then set Vista to manage the page file and reboot. Yes, you need a page file, even with 128GB of RAM max in Vista Ultimate.

I would untick them all - except Windows and security apps.

They may try and reinsinuate themselves in startup - probably need to look at each app. under settings or options and uncheck "start with windows" , or similar.

Do all as mentioned above. Then, when you bootup, pull up your task manager, click on process, sort by cpu, and wait for the drive to get busy. then hopefully you can see what activities are causing this.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the input.
Looks as if Setpoint was a big issue, along with the Dell printer monitor. Still experimenting. They were ok until SP2, so maybe an app conflict.
As far as a swap file, I have not seen any information that convinces me I will need one. There are many threads on this in these forums, and my experience bears out the do not need side. I am certainly open to new information, but logic has it that it is not needed unless you have more program executables than can fit, and mine top at 3.5GB out of 20GB
Thanks again
Joe

Some apps physically require a page file and if its not there, they will crash.

I would be interested in any of those apps. I have the Full Adobe CS4 suite, and they seem to be ok, as well as MS Off 2007 Pro. I guess those are my main concern.
Thanks

When something crashes, you'll find out. Out of interest, how is your RAM configured?

Frost,
FB SDRAM ECC @ 800MHZ 4x4G and 2x2G Dimms quad channeled.

If I recall correctly, applications may ask for a scratch disk. Only the OS can swap memory.

Yes that's correct and its better if you bought a kit of RAM that is matched, such as a 12GB Corsair triple channel kit, depending on your mobo and cpu. Fill in your system specs though, in case you need any other help. The diagnostic suite in my kit will help, if you need it.

Frost,
Thanks a ton. Will be playing with these over the next few days. I do believe SP2 is part of the issue as I had a similar issue with my V32 laptop after install.
