Unwanted Drive Re-naming - How to stop it?

Vista has a terrible habit of renaming my drives. I have 3 external USB hard drives and I back up data from my C: drive to the external drives automatically using SyncBack. However, when a new USB device is plugged into the computer (flash drive, iPod, etc.), Vista will take the drive name assigned to one of the external hard drives, give that designation to the new device and re-name the external hard drive. Then SyncBack can't "find" the external hard drive (which now has a new letter designation), so back-up operations fail. I know how to go in and manually reset the drive names, but it is a pain. Is there any way to "lock" a letter designation to a drive or device to present Vista from arbitrarly changing the name?

Thanks for your help.
