Explorer Crashes Constantly...

Vista Guru
Hello,

Recently, it seems, a lot of vista machines are experiencing explorer crashes. Mostly mine are from ntdll.dll but they are all split. It also mostly crashes when I move files, open control panel, or right click, the latter being the most significant. I have disabled every programs' context menu to see if it was that and nothing. It still crashed. ShellExView doesn't seem to do any good either. I've been using autoruns from SysInternals. I'm going to upload all the crash information.

Other than that there isnt much else to explain. Usually I'll be working along then boom, explorer is restarting... It even did it to me just from adding a quick launch icon. I have no idea what the cause is...

Well here are the crash events in order of occurrence, top being most recent:

Also, I remember reading somewhere that Firefox was the culprit. Specifically the 3.5.x versions. From what I've its a big topic on the mozilla forums but I didn't check into it.

[EDIT]: Just searched the mozilla forums for anything with explorer.exe and I didnt get anything. This is weird. I only have 17 programs on this computer, I'll list any non-ms applications.

Crucial,
It's gonna be hard offering advice, b/c you've probably thought of everything I'm going to suggest.

Did you look at the Device Manager for question marks or exclamation marks?
Will it crash if you are in safe mode?
I have trouble believing it's FF. Do you have any unusual add-ons?
Are you using Windows Live? If so, uninstall the family safety program.
Realtek driver update? http://www.realtek.com.tw/DOWNLOADS/

Since this is an app crash can you go into event viewer (type event viewer in search) and go to the windows log, application tab. could you tell me what the event id and source are for the explorer crash?

thanks

Neither device manager or event viewer are working right now, so I'm going to re-boot then see what happens..

Also, I keep getting the noise that a external device is being plugged in. That little duh doom. But there isn't anything even being plugged in...

[EDIT] Reboot allowed me to access the event viewer and device manager, device manager didnt show anything out of date...

@lemur No Windows Live, FF addons are: avg safe search 8.5, better privacy, location bar, mailcatch temp emails, .net framework assistant, persona's and web of trust.

@zigzag

The source is: Application Error, the Event ID is 1000

Also I keep getting WMI errors and PnP errors in the event log, like constantly they are there.

WMI Error: Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Here is a screenshot from the health check, sometimes that will say 1, sometimes 0.

Another [EDIT] I went onto HP's site to look for new drivers. And every time I see the Intel Display Adapter Driver with version number: 7.15.10.1554 D but when I try to install it the computer says it an old driver? My current driver version is: 7.15.10.1554

I may have a lead. The laptop I have has a removable CD/DVD drive for weight savings, well yesterday I was going to create system restore disks but it kept popping up saying I didn't have a CD/DVD drive capable of burning the disks. Now, mind you, this is with a brand new never used DVD with 4.7gb of space. I know the drive works because all of my Linux 'Live CD' work flawlessly, so it is burning the info properly. So I'm going to see if I can find the drivers for it or just remove it completely to see if it solves my problems...

Good enough I think I have this one. Its caused by DEP data execution prevention. Its located in control panel>system control panel>advanced system settings>performance settings>DEP it should be on for ALL programs.

let me know if that fixes it

I just applied the setting, I'll see if it helps, if it doesnt, my dvd drive is next to go, I searched my drive number and a lot of HP machines have problems with applications recognizing that it is active. So until they fix it, that might continue to be a problem :(

It just crashed... Twice actually. The first time I had to do it manually because it stopped everything but the mouse. Next time was like 3 seconds ago and all I did was right click the desktop. Only processes running right now are: firefox and windbg, taskbar apps are: AVG, touchpad, and sound

Then of course, right after explorer crashes the first time, everything goes haywire. I;m attaching a screen shot of the error I get trying to open Event Viewer after explorer crashed.

Idk if this means anything, but I ran driverquery in cmd to see what drivers I had as far as wireless drivers, and it's showing a intel wifi link pro wireless driver, I'm using broadcom right now. Are the two conflicting? Could it be the CD/DVD drive? Also, I always have internet radio running, and sometimes it will stop, and at the bottom of the firefox screen it will say 'Done' instead of 'Transferring Data...'

Ok so the explorer is still at it. anything in evtvwr, or dump? have you done an sfc? Do you have a backup to restore from and a vista dvd?

Check DEP to make sure. If necessary we can exempt it

I attached the sfc results. They are the same as always. Just sidebar settings.ini files are bad. Been that way for a long time, supposedly its nothing to worry about, its a problem with sfc.

Crucial, if you go to Problems Reports and Solutions can you pinpoint the exact date and time this problem started? If yes, then could you go to Programs and Features and see if there was anything installed just prior to that? It's a long shot, but what the heck.

I erase the problem history a lot so that isn't possible. Even so I barely have anything installed on this machine lol.
