restart function

my laptop,running vista,does not obey the restart function.neither when prompted by an update nor when i invoke.it will shut down but on restart it closes down..........then i get the bios info.then it stay black screen,power indicator on only,no activity.....every now and then,very rarely,it completes the full restart.any help appreciated.vista full scan does not help,check online for problem/solutions does not help,rebooting to factory condition,from D:\ does not help.prayer ditto.:confused:

That sounds like a BIOS issue, can you go into BIOS and search for power options? Also do you have any HP junk, I mean software, that can modify the power settings? Have you enabled sleep in the option for your power plan and when you close the lid?

never seen power options in my bios.did not look too hard,dangerous territory,i am told.on a cursory look did not find anything pertinent.i have access to power options;battery/plugged in...........lid...........sleep all there.should i opt to restore default settings?on power plan?this machine permanently on power,seldom battery.thanks

Choose default setting, then in advanced settings enable sleep. Choose sleep on battery/power when the lid closes. It might be the BIOS, contact HP if you arn't sure.
