Desktop file ares no longer located in C:\Users Help !!

Hey guys,

I booted up my computer to find that all my desktop files and bookmarks etc were gone. But All my files are still under C:\Users.
But now the desktop is refering to C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop.

Can anyone help me out with fixing it so that my user files are actually under user files ?

youu install something called systempro? you have a current anti-virus? do you have a backup that you can restore from?

All my desktop files are still in C:User, Its just that my desktop is now pointing to a new desktop and misc settings profile in C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop.

So I can no longer see the files that are in C:User on my desktop and my programs no longer refer to C:User they all now work from C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop.

Hello Kravit, and welcome to Vista Forums.

See if applying OPTION THREE in the tutorial below for your Desktop folder may be able to restore this folder back to the default C:\Users\(user-name)\Desktop location after a restart or two.

I moved everything back to C:\Users\Mike

But now all files in User\Mike is showing up on desktop. So conctact,downloads,documents,desktop,favourites,links,music,pictures etc are all now on desktop

Pretty much everything has doubled

Go ahead and download and merge all of the user folders that are not correct using OPTION THREE to restore them as well.

Hey Brink,
It worked, But now my C:User/Mike is called C:User/Desktop
Looks like this

Is there anyway to change it back to correct folder called Mike
Its still reading as If i have two desktops.

If you type shell:UsersFilesFolder in the Start Menu search line and press enter, does it open to your C:\Users\Mike folder?

Yes it does,

There is still problem with my desktop from C:users\Mike file being located to C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile

I did run regedit for desktop files, but hasnt linked it back to C:users\mike

I think might be because my user name is called C:Users\Desktop still. So if i could rename that back to Mike it should fix it.

It does change back to C:\Users\Mike after clicking on file location. Its just being displayed as C:\Users\Desktop as the above image.

Not sure what happened with your main user folder, but you might create a new Adminsitrator account instead. Afterwards, copy the contents of your old account's user folders into the new account's corresponding user folders. If eveything checks out ok in the new account, then you can delete the old account from withing the new one.

Yep, that's what copying the contents from the old user folders to the new user folders will do.
