startup repair issues

Hello,

So my dell XPS with vista started acting up today. When I started it up it took forever then went into the startup repair tool. After repeatedly running startup repair I got the blue screen of death. Restarted and then I chose a system restore point, and ran the startup repair again.

Well after about 3 hours of the repair running and having my computer restarting about 40-50 times its still has not allowed me to actually run windows.

I should let you know that my laptop battery is completely dead and no longer works. Today I just yanked the power cord out while windows was running if that has anything to do with it.

Thank you guys very much in advance,

Sonic

Helllo Sonic and Welcome to vista forums! We are very happy to have you here!

I would suggest that you do a reinstall. When you do this it will save all of you documents into a Windows.old folder in the C:\ drive and you will be able to access them after you reinstall.

Let me know,
Ben

Don't give up! If you can boot into Windows, post the .dmp files in C:\Minidump, or C:\Windows in a .zip file.

Hey Ben,

How exactly does one go about doing this without being able to enter windows? I dont have my Vista installation cd with me right now either.

Thanks to both of you for the help

My Computer

You need a vista cd to reinstall the OS, or the backup you should have made if there was something in the manual. If you have neither, either try safe mode, and if that doesn't work, wait for Windows 7 Home Premium. You can the Ubuntu live cd to extract your data and the .dmp file and use another pc to check the .dmp file to prevent it happening again with 7.

Well now I get the blue screen of death;

CLYS.sys

page_fault_in_non-paged_area

goes on to say:

Disable Bios memory options such as caching or shadowing.

This comes after I let the startup repair run for a few hours.

Any ideas or am I SOL?

My Computer

Do you have any family's/relatives/friends computer you can access that have a DVD-R burner? If so, i will send you the installation files and you can burn the .iso to a DVD.

Let me know,
Ben

Hey Boot into BIOS by hitting whatever key your computer uses (usually F2) on boot. find the section that says max memory and uncheck it. also find max upu and uncheck. if you have caching or shadowing disable them

reboot and see if it works

I entered the BIOS but I could not find the max memory or anything you mentioned. I assume the BIOS is the blue screen where you can access and change a bunch of things from wifi to POST settings to seeing your system info. This is after pressing F2.

Ben would it be as simple just burning the windows files to a dvd and then firing it into my dvd rom?

Pardon me for my computer illiteracy, but Im definately learning here.

Thanks guys.

Edit: how do you send PM's ont his board?

My Computer

Make sure the BIOS options are not saying anything is overclocked. Click on the user name to access the option to send a PM.
