Vista Home Premium 32 bit 0x0000007e

Hello. I have a Dell XPS 410 with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Bought it over two years ago, and not a bit of trouble until three weeks ago, when it stopped shutting down properly. Same problem when I ask it to sleep: it starts the shutdown/sleep process, then goes blue screen, then comes back up with a message saying Windows was not shut down properly. Otherwise, it runs exactly like before.

The bugcheck is 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0x8e0699b5, 0x803d0b68, 0x803d0864)

A Dell tech working remotely on my computer told me that I had an infection in the registry and wanted $130 to fix it. I'm trying to fix it myself, but so far no luck.

I was running Norton 360 at the time of the infection, and I've since installed Kapersky, which didn't fix the infection. The Kapersky tech did send me Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, but that didn't help either.

My next step is to contact Norton since the infection happened under their watch, but if anyone out there has another/better suggestion, I am interested.

Thank you in advance.

Timothy

Please navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump, zip up the contents of that folder, and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

Quite often we see problems with Norton Internet Security. In order to test this:
- download a free antivirus (I recommend Avira Free from here: Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir
- uninstall Norton using the free Norton Removal Tool from here: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool
- IMMEDIATELY install the free antivirus and update it
- test to see if the BSOD's continue.

Thanks for the leads usasma.

Tried to zip up contents of Minidump folder, but 7z won't do it. If you really need that, I'll try Winzip.

Avira Antivirus found nothing.

Ran the free versions of Registry Repair 2009 and Registrybooster, and they both found plenty of things. Would you recommend one or the other?

Finally, wondering about the wisdom of doing a System Restore at this point.

Thanks again.

I wouldn't run either reg repair yet. Re: sys restore, if you have a backup to restore from it might work, there is also a system file checker (sfc /scannow) you can run to check on the system files, and finally If you had to you could do a clean re-install.

Hope this helps, and whatever John (usamsa) suggested I would do he has an awesome track record

Hello zigzag3143,

Thanks for the advice. When you said "backup" in relation to a restore, did you mean something separate from the system restore that is on the computer? That's all I have.

I did run the system file checker, and it reported:
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

John had asked for a zip of my Minidump file, but I can't get Winzip to read the files. Any hints there?
The computer is still running fine, just can't shut it off or sleep it without a BSOD.
Why not run a registry repair?
Okay, enough for now. I've learned a lot but still haven't fixed the problem.
