Kids deleting files

My 3 year old daughter can now use the mouse, cruise the internet and DELETE PHOTO files off the computer!

I have tried in vain to work out how to delete protect files. I'm sure that I used to be able to do this in DOS! I have tried making a new user and using 'protections' but can't seem to get it to do this simple little thing.

If someone were able to help me, I would be forever grateful.

If you right click the files/folders you want to protect you can edit the permissions regular users have in those folders. If you want her to be able to look but not delete then uncheck modify, write, and anything else but view. You could also create a special user that is like a guest and that would further portect them

Thanks Ken.

I’ve activated the Guest account and put passwords on the ‘administrator’ and ‘standards user accounts. This should stop her most of the time but I would still like to set up the permissions on our ‘standard’ user account. You wouldn’t believe how quick she is to jump onto the computer if we step away to pick up the phone or something.

This is where I had a couple of problems.

From our ‘standard user account’, I right clicked on a file and select ‘Properties’, ‘Security’ tab and ‘Edit’. This gives the following checkbox permission options: ‘Full control’, ‘modify’, ‘read and execute’, ‘Read’, ‘Write’ and ‘Special permissions’.

All good so far but now the fun begins!

If I check ‘deny-full control’ or ‘deny-modify’, it automatically checks ‘read and execute’, ‘Read’ and ‘Write’. This results in not being able to delete the file, but also not being able to view it either. If I try to uncheck the ‘deny-read’ box, it also unchecks everything except ‘write’. This means that it can still be deleted.

Any further help would be much appreciated.

The options are self explanatory. Deny full control means there is no control, no reading means the options for writing are enabled.

Thanks Frosty, but what I really want to do is deny everything except 'read' for standard users and it doesn't seem to let me do this.

I would have thought that this would have been a relatively common issue and the solution would have been more "self explanatory". Even my local computer shop didn't have any idea how to do it.
