vista takes 20 minutes to boot

good morning to everyone

at some point yesterday i restarted my notebook, and it appeared that vista froze on boot screen. after several restarts and system restores from dvd, for some reason i did nothing at an additional freeze, and after ages vista booted successfully. i tried several more times and timed approx 20 minutes of hangup during each boot.

i read around various forums, tried some things and nothing helps. to help as much as possible the people that might help me, here's what i gather's relevant:

system-
msi gx720 notebook
intel core2extreme quad core 9100
4 gb ddr2 800mhz ram

all devices in device manager are fine

driverAgent scan showed four outdated drivers-
ENE CIR receiver
realtek wireless LAN adapter
PCIE root port
PCIE processor to DRAM controller

no unessential services / programs run on startup

i ran "sfc /scannow" which showed minor stuff that it claims it fixed

bootlog showed four drivers that didnt load:
NDProxy.SYS
srv.sys
NDProxy.SYS
srv.sys

either it loads everything twice, or boot logger just adds logs to the same file, instead of replacing. dunno, also, about these drivers it says both loaded and didnt load, like this:

Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS

event viewer:
windows>system show nothing interesting,
diagnostics-performance have a huge gap and show nothing anywhere close the time of troubles.

no usb devices were plugged in and all internal toys like camera and bluetooth were off.

the only thing that happened before this started that was out of everyday routine was an attempt to install sp2, which told me that driver msdsm (i think), is incompatible, after which i quit the installer and forgot about it.

this is all i can think of so far.
please please help me kind people

thanks,
michael

first of all i suggest check with the manufacturer to get them to give you a replacement notebook esp when you would have spent about 3K US on an extreme edition notebook. otherwise you can always manually change the voltage for individual components in your bios see if that helps. is your pc in a hot room, or an incredibly hot environment, start it in safe mode to see, get an aircompressor open it up (if its old and blow the dust out of it) try backing up your files if all this doesnt work to an external Hard Drive or something similar and give it a fresh install, check it out.
ACTUALLY do a chkdsk -r for damage to your HDD (maybe corrupted etc) (will take about 4+ hours) in "cmd prompt", there's a few things to check out yet. see my post on my 790i, took me about 8-9 months to get it sorted, works like a dream now. But notebooks are easier as they are usually covered by warranty vs homebuilt pc's.
so do the chkdsk -r in cmd as admin (restart it will commence) check to see if your notebooks options in the system tray are on power saving mode. use the power cable at all times for these diagnostics. download belarc advisor and see if your ram is playing up.
I think its the OS - a fresh install should fix it.

first of all thanks, very much, and i'll happily press the button at the top-right

the process of getting a replacement for this specific notebook is very painful to imagine, so i hope it won't come to that

notebook's in normal, clean and healthy environment, 2 months old. insides are clean.
what should i look for in safemode?
where can i find your post about 790i?
what else can i check for in cmd?

ill do the chkdsk, if not this then reinstall :(. would very much like to know what's the sudden reason for this though, it will help me get rid of this blind helpless feeling.

anything else might come to your mind would be wonderful

thanks again,
michael

If i was you id reinstall vista.

If you run "sfc /scannow" and it finds errors then something has gone horribly wrong and your Operating System has become corrupt. The best thing to do would be to reinstall.

You should run antivirus scans then back up your data and click the link in my signature for a guide on reinstalling vista.

Also, open msconfig and disable all startup items and non-microsoft service and reboot.

Have you tried registry clean and defrag? try Auslogics if you can get it to boot and clean disk, clean registry, defrag disk, and setup a registry defrag. if all that doesn't work THEN try a reinstall. witha full reinstall. If that still doesn't work, that says hardware.

did you try the chkdsk -r to see if your hard drive had become corrupt and needed fixing?
If it boots, but the hard drive is corrupt, it can just need fixing, - the chkdsk -r in a command prompt (as administrator) would do that.
I know with HP they can do phone support to fix your problems and if they can't they send someone to look at your pc within 3 working days.
Meanwhile go into your bios (as soon as you turn on your computer it might ask you to press del to enter startup or f8 for alot of laptops, see if they have any in-built diagnostics, I know mine does run a few of them, and check it out. I dont think its your ram, otherwise your computer would freeze indefinitely. Search online for people with the same exact laptop with the exact same problems, you never know what problems in common people have and how they resolved it.

Its chkdsk /r, and I would would scan with Malwarebytes ans SuperAntiSpyware to elimanate trojan infections. Try Sophos Anti-Rootkit too.

Re: vista takes 20 minutes to boot - [SOLVED]

thank you everyone for your support!

i have done chdsk -r, wonderful thing, will keep in mind, but didnt help.

i have found and confirmed that the source of my troubles was SP2.
since the only thing ive done a moment before everything started was attempting to install sp2, i took a wild guess i searched "vista sp2 slow boot". found among other things this thread -

Slow Boot After Vista SP2 Upgrade

reading through, had a test - reinstalled everything except SP2, restarted several times wonderfully, installed SP2, voila - 20 minutes boot. reinstalled again, here i am.

The amount of machines to respond this way to SP2 is minimal, so there's probably little or now help in this discovery of mine to this forum, but i hope this added even a tiny bit.

anyway, i am very happy. thank you everyone

michael
