Solved Blocking / Unblocking a Startup

On my x64 box, TFS power tools was conflicting with Office Communicator. So I blocked Office Communictor from the startup sequence. As I expected, at startup I would get a message "Blocked startup programs" with the option to "run blocked program" if I want to launch Office Communicator explicitly. Good.

Then I uninstalled TFS power tools, and decided to unblock Office Communicator, so it can run at startup again. Unfortunately, the Office Communicator app shows as "Permitted," but is still being blocked at startup.

In other words, I can't unblock Office Communicator. Vista says it is "permitted", but it is not permitted at startup. I tried disabling and re-enabling it, to see if it would clear up, but no good.

How do I force it to be unblocked so that it will run at startup?

Steps 8 to 12 in Method Two of OPTION TWO in the tutorial below may be able to stop this for you if you did this through msconfig.

I've tried both approaches (windows defender and msconfig) and I still cannot get MS Communictor to auto "startup." It is appropriately listed in both tools for a normal startup, but it gets blocked anyway (until I manually run it).

I think the problem is that I found some way to configure MS Communictor to permenantly "run as administrator," and that privilege is not permitted as any kind of startup option. So now the question is: how do I re-configure it so that it is not automatically "run as administrator?"

You might see if you can use Method Two in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below to create a startup task instead. This should allow a program with "Run as administrator" to run at startup without being blocked.

I found the problem. It was because, on the "communicator.exe" file itself, I had set propeties (Compatibility->Run this program as an administrator).

Once I cleared that check box, Vista could launch the program from the start up group.
