I was just wondering how different users have there fans setup, blowing hot air out, or, sucking cooler air in.
What do you think is best, and of course, if anybody has any tips they want to share, all the better.

I have mine arranged as follows.
  • In-flow2 x 80mm front mounted (one above the other), draws cool air over the HDDs and into the case. Additional inflow through vents in side of case.
  • Exhaust 1 x 120mm rear mounted fan and also the fan built in to the PSU. (2 effective exhaust fans).
Ideally, you should arrange for a balanced air flow. The amount of air being fed into your system by the in-flow fans should be less or equal to the amount being removed by the exhaust ones. Any imbalance is taken up by air flowing into your case through its vents. You can easily check this by holding your hand over the main exhaust fan to feel the air flow coming through it. This should feel smooth and not too hot (mine feels cool). If you have an imbalanced system, i.e. one with more air in than out, then you are in danger of overheating.

I have two 120 mm's in the front, sucking cool air in. Then another 120mm inside the case attached to my HDD rack, to support the 120mm in front and get more air to the GPU. Then one 120mm on my Heatsink, another one on the back panel and another on top. So that's 2 sucking in (the one on the HDD rack is more of a 'transporter') (3with the heatsink one) and 2 blowing out the back. My airflow runs from bottom front to top back in diagonal path troughout the case (can you visualize it?:p)

Not in my case (no pun intended ;))

Since my case is so 'open' it's primarily a 'blow' configuration.


  • 1x230mm, 1x120mm front intake
  • 4x120mm side intake
  • 1x120mm inside front (augments front 230mm)
  • 1x120mm bottom of case intake (basically keeps 2nd video card cooler)
  • 1x230mm top exhaust
  • 1x140mm rear exhaust (basically useless)
It works for me :)

if you suck more air in than your blowing out or vice versa it creates a volume of trapped air that circulates around the case getting hotter and hotter (to a point obviously im not saying it gets to 100 degrees or out :p )

you need a good balance of "suck" and "blow" this can also be balanced out with vents or small holes in the case sides as are often present in new cases.

the differance between balanced and unbalanced cooling can be small but as your asking...........

You could fry an egg on my wifes laptop , its always been like that , i wouldnt dare check the temps , it works so i just assume its fine .......... it blows ALL the time ha ha probably something to do with the fact it was switched on when we got it 10 months ago and its NEVER been switched off since :p

but where dust is concerned a ''positive'' pressure is preferred (more in than out).

ok in mine there are 3x 120mm intakes 2x 140mm outs and 1x 120 out.... and then whichever way the psu fan blows haha....... i think the last 120 is out anyway...... it might be intake...... i forget :party: haha

yeah i hosed it down with cold water , got it right inside made sure it cleaned all the components properly then gave it a soapy bath..............its not been the same since tbh dunno why

it was probably the sponge you used, the soft material causes static.....lol :p

High pressure hot water is the best. Highly recommend it;)

I believe putting a laptop in the dishwasher on a gentle cycle does a good job.The dying cycle works wonders. [I haven't tried it yet.] :rolleyes:

well, my psu (with 120mm fan) 295 co-op and 9800 are all blowers along with a rear 120mm and a top 250mm

as for suckers, I have a front 250mm and a side 350mm along with my Asus royal knight cou cooler which is so tall it sits too damn close to the side fan (if you push on the outside fan the touch so I have a strict hands off policy when running).

I dunno if it has +/- pressure but it's open well enough with HDD cage and right side vents that it wouldn't matter one way or the other and probably stays balanced
