Solved mmc, regedit, task manager not working (scn shot included)

Hi, After having some difficulty with "the black screen of death" and coming to the realization that my CA anti-virus wasn't picking up the bug that was causing my problems, I've switched to Norton 360 and eliminated the virus that was giving me fits. However, now that I've got my desktop back and things seem to be (a bit more) back to normal, I can't open my task manager or get into my disk manager or registry editor. The task manager just simply won't show up as an option and opening mmc/regedit just brings up the notepad. Any ideas?

Download and extract the View attachment UnHookExec.zip. Right click on the unhookexec.inf and select install.

Try to open the task manager again :)

If my guess is correct you are having problem in associations....

Download the View attachment regfix_vista.reg and save it at your desktop.

Right click on the file are u getting merge option?

Yeah, I'm getting the "Merge" option. But when I click on it the notepad comes up and I get a prompt saying "Cannot find the regedit.exe file. Do you want to create a new file?"

what happens if you run regedit.exe as administrator. I mean what happens when you right click and select run as administrator on regedit.exe. That file will be located c:\windows directory

open CMD window and type

cd \ (enter)

now type

c:\windows\copy regedit.exe regedit.com

When you read the message, 1 file has correctly been copied, you can type

c:\windows\start regedit.com

and the famous regedit can be open whit the window editor!

now inside the regedit navigate to and select the key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

In the right pane, double-click the (Default) value.

Delete the current value data, and then type:

"%1" %*

(Type the characters: quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk).

now navigate into the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\regedit.exe

in the right panel, right click of the mouse on the value "Debugger" and delete ! (Date of Value are C:\windows\notepad.exe)

Try to open regedit from run :)

Thanks for your help buddy, but I had already found that solution on another forum and it didn't work. I did, however, manage to solve my problem. I downloaded RRT which fixed my task manager and ComboFix which fixed all my other problems.
