Solved Vista won't start - Startup Repair can't.. what next

Hi guys

I am new to the forum, came accross a couple of your threads via Google and have been on flicking round the forum trying out some of the suggestions and nothing has worked so far. I am a bit scared that I will mess it up entirely but at the point that the darn thing won't work properly anyway.

The problem is my PC will start, brings up the scanning Microsoft bar thingy then goes blank.

I have tried a System Restore to various different dates - no joy.

I have run Startup Repair (numerous times!) and get the following:- Windows cannot repair this computer automatically

In the Diagnosis and Repair Details it says

I have run the System Restore Function to the oldest stored point, before a HP update which is the only update that I can see on there.

It will start quite happily in safe mode, I did the msconfig thing and turned off all the bits in as per another thread and all the start up stuff but the problem was still there. I am now well and truly out of my comfort zone.

So the question is what next?

What else do you need to know?

Tried the log thing but the txt file was blank?

I have CC cleaner. Used it before to delete old files and old registry entries, invalid paths etc.

Any other clues on what I can do?

Ok so I said I was out of my comfort zone.... have just found out how to actually run a sfc scan and done that. Now have loads in the text file. D'oh. Just figuring what to do with it.

OK most of it looks the same, only one that doesn't says

OK. After running the SFC Scan, will it now boot in to Vista, or is it still stuck at the loading bar ?.

There are a few things you can try, have you tried a startup repair ? go here to learn how.

What i would do next is to go in to the device manager and un-install the video card drivers, reboot and let Vista load the generic drivers, and see if it boots OK.
It boots OK in safe mode, so it's likely to be a software issue.
When in safe mode, go to,
start,
search,
in search type "msconfig", hit enter and go to startup tab,
disable all and try to boot. You will probably lose sound and other things, it's just to see if a startup program is causing the problem.
Are you running any anti-virus program, i know Kaspersky had problems.
Try these and post your results.

Yup run startup repair loads, says it cannot automatically repair. See first post.

Is a display adapter a video card (yes I am that thick!) It says NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS If I uninstall it what will happen when I reboot.... will it work or will I have made the problem worse?!

I also tried the disabling all items on the start up menu and the non microsoft stuff and rebooting before and that didn't work.

Sorry to be such a pain in the behind, I appreciate your patience with me!

OK, un-install the Geforce 8400GS, (device manager) and reboot, if it is this thats causing the problem you can re-install the drivers for it easily. After the reboot, Vista will load the generic drivers, (if it reboots) It's a slow process of elimination.
The problem is made worse by not being able to carry out a system restore, don't you just love computers ?.

OK so that had a result with that....

It restarted but everything was large in size but it did start. Gave me the following message

Error Loading
C:\windows\system32\NVCPL.DLL
Specified module could not be found

Clicked OK and it continued loading, all icons etc large. It then said installing driver software and then restart your computer. Which I did and guess what.... black screen again.

So does this pin point the problem or not help at all?

And yes I do love working computers but thinking about taking a very large sledge hammer to my PC (thank god for my lil netbook!)

It would seem that it is the driver or the video card.
Start in safe mode and do the same again, un-install the card in device manager, when you reboot don't let it install the driver.
You will need to download a new driver for your graphics card, go here.

Drivers - Download Nvidia Drivers

Use option two, "Graphics driver", it will install a search program and tell you what you need, download the driver.

Before you install the new driver, boot in to safe mode and use the driver sweeper, link below, this will clean out any remnants of the old driver.

Giraud - Driver Sweeper

So, to recap,
Remove card from device manager. Reboot. (don't load Vista driver).
Download driver sweeper and the Nvidia driver.
Boot in to safe mode.
Run driver sweeper.
Reboot and install the new Nvidia driver.
This will eliminate the graphics driver (and hopefully fix it).
Give it a go and post the results.

Oh Stoney I know you are going to get cross with me but how can I stop it from re installing the driver when I reboot plus it wont let me on to the internet to download in safe mode (even if I select with networking) so how do I do that? I am such a div aren't I? Bet you wish you had left this one to someone else!

When you reboot from un-installing the driver in the device manager, it should ask permission to install the new driver. Deny it, don't let it install. If you cant stop it, just don't reboot until you have the new driver and driver sweeper.
If you cant get on the internet in safe mode, it may be that your file system is corrupt, if thats the case it may be necessary to re-install Vista.

If we have to reinstall Vista can you do that without a Vista disc... I was a total twit and never made a back up. I think we have got a D drive with stuff on it but clutching at straws now!

Your D drive is a recovery drive and will restore your PC to the factory settings.
If it comes to that, you will be able to keep all the files that you want by booting in to safe mode and saving them to disk.
Try the driver sweeper and new driver first though, it's a bit drastic re-installing vista, so save that as a last resort.

Stoney I thank you very much for all your help. I am going away for a couple of days and haven't packed a thing, so prob won't have the time to sit and fiddle now I want to give it my fullest rather than doing a bit and being distracted. Back from my little hol. Just run the driver sweep thing altho google found Guru sweep or something, it couldn't find the one you said. Anyway I have just rebooted and I have got a command prompt asking

C:\NVIDIA\*, Are you sure (Y/N)?

What does that mean??? Be afraid, be very afraid! What have I done?

Just to recap, you have downloaded driver sweeper and removed the Nvidia drivers, (in safe mode), rebooted and got this message, is this in safe mode or normal ?.

Thanks for responding.....I think i'm now in normal mode. But as soon as you log in to the vista screen with your password thats what appears.
