Hello,

So I have been reading a lot lately about the registry cleaners and vista. It seems everyone has their own opinion on why not to use one, and why to use one... Well come to find out the cause of the wide spread Windows Update 80004002 error for me was using Glary Utilities and CCleaner's reg cleaner... So I'm asking why are so many people against it? I'm looking for factual evidence why they are bad for Vista or XP

Although this article was written for XP, the registry issues remain the same with Vista and Win7: XP Fixes Myth #1: Registry Cleaners

Also, I've used registry cleaners routinely (in the past) and have had numerous problems with those systems (XP). I stopped using the registry cleaners and the problems stopped.

I have not used a registry cleaner with Vista or with Win7 - and don't intend to ever try one.

I used to use CCleaner but switched to Glary Utilities as it has easy one-click maintenance and a startup manager. I haven't had any problems yet and Glary basically picks up unused file associations and handlers from poorly coded uninstallation programs. I scan once a week.

It works fine under 64-bit, and in combination with Norton 360's automatic disk defrag, everything seems fine. Most of the other registry cleaners are too aggressive and may destroy something they shouldn't. Even so, I check the report Glary reports before I let it clean anything, and have a registry backup at hand. They haven't caused any problems and as the registry naturally is used constantly it seems a good idea to clean it often.

I read the full article on the XP registry 'cleaner' and that is quite impressive. I would have never guessed that those types of applications were destructive... Thanks for the information though. Very useful :)

I'm using CCleaner and Glary and they caused me to receive the infamous Windows update error 80004002 so I imported my old registry and it fixed the problem...

Another great post, thanks so much. It's amazing, I honestly would've never thought that registry cleaners were destructive. I'm contemplating a system restore and starting over without touching it. But I'm not sure if that would be a drastic measure... Either way, these post were great. you guys rock.

I had plenty of bad experience with registry cleaner which reduced to the usage of only CCleaner for peace of mind. However, I left it along for a few months now. I believe you will get used to it after a while. Therefore, I don't think it is drastic at all to not fix anything while it is not broken. Cheers.

Hello all,

So now that I have a clue about reg cleaners, whats the scoop on reg defragers? Are they just as harmful? Or actually useful?

I'll use it once a month roughly if thats enough for defragmentation. That seems to make more of a difference then registry cleaners.
