screen saver on the fritz

I seem to be having some trouble with my screen saver. I have the picture viewer as my preferred screen saver but it doesn't seem to work at all.

The preview image shows that I should be seeing something, but when I click the "preview" button, the screen goes black and doesn't cycle through anything. It is as though the screen saver is activated, but not cycling. All other screen savers work except the picture viewer.

I use a nvidia 9300 GE, which I just updated the drivers for about 2 days ago.

Hello,

Double check in the folder that you have the pictures for the screen saver in to see if you have any other file types (ex: video or music) in there other than image file types. If you do, then move them to another location. These, especially video files, can cause problems with the Photos screen saver.

That's for the info, that's something I did not know. Unfortunately, I don't think that is the problem. I made a test folder on my desktop and placed four images inside. The screen saver did not work for those either.

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command may help if it is a issue with a bad system file.

I just ran the sfc/scannow command and got this:

I went to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to view the report, but it's all terminology that I do not understand. If I knew what a problem looked like in there, I imagine I could recognize it, then diagnose and eventually repair the problem, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

Is there anywhere I can go or anything I can do with this log to fix the corrupted data?

You can do the yellow TIP box at the tutorial link to get a text file of the SFC log, then upload it here. We can then take a look at it to see if anything in it may be the issue. :)

I just read about the system files from the absurdly well written "how to" acess vista install DVD files. I presume that is probbaly the route I will eventually take, but right now I am trying to identify the corrupted data.

In my CBS report, I did a search for the word "corrupt" and found four results. I'm not sure if that's a lot or a little, but I took images of the report to present here.

From the log images you posted, you have a corrupted file (settings.ini) for Windows Sidebar.

If this hasn't happened to long a go, you might be able to do a System Restore using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully fix it.
