Solved Cannot delete folder: 'You Need Permission To Perform This Action'...

I know this is a common problem, but hoping someone could help me! I was just following the instructions from an older thread (http://www.vistax64.com/vista-gener...older-you-need-permission-perform-action.html ) to get rid of a folder called "Pictures 8-12-09" on my Desktop. Vista gave me the dreaded 'You Need Permission To Perform This Action' message, so I tried using all the methods listed in the thread, one of which was

Unfortunately I have another folder on my Desktop called just "Pictures"... and typing "DEL Pictures 8-12-09" in the cmd.exe prompt deleted all the files in my "Pictures" folder (i.e. Pictures\*), and then tried to delete the subfolder "8-12-09" in "Pictures" (which, of course, doesn't exist).

At this point, I still have the "Pictures 8-12-09" folder on my Desktop, and all the pictures in my "Pictures" folder are gone! :cry: Can someone help me get them back?

Have you tried to restore them from the bin.
You may have ome luck with some fre undelete programs, google for undelete and see what it comes up with.

Using explorer go to my computer.
Click on the C: drive
In tools go to view
Click on show hidden files and folders
Ensure the tick is taken away from hide protected operating system files.
Note after you have completed this task change the last two settings back if needed.
While on the C: drive click on users
Now click on your user name
click on desk top
try and remove it by selecting it and choose delete.

Well I'll be darned, I tried again with quotes around the filename and it worked this time. Anyone know why cmd.exe would assume a space means *?

Now the problem is getting all those old "Pictures" files back... someone suggested pc inspector file recovery, I suppose I'll try that first.

That's the problem... the deleted files aren't in the recycle bin... they just disappeared. Is that what happens when you delete from the cmd.exe command prompt? Gah!

Thanks for your help! If you have any advice about PC Inspector or other undeleters I would much appreciate it :)

I suggest you use Shadow Explorer ( ShadowExplorer.com - About ). If you have any restore point from before you deleted the pics, you will get them back. In case you need further instructions, you can watch my (rather lengthy) video tutorial. ( http://www.vimeo.com/3236026 ).

I don't have a restore point recent enough to use Shadow Explorer, unfortunately, but it looks nifty useful -- I will keep it bookmarked for future reference!

Hey guys, I know this may seem too simple to be true but I have to say it anyway.

I recently had a problem with an undeletable folder and after trying everything, from registry "boosters" to command prompts, I simply opened the Task manager and made sure there wasn't a process running that was using the folder.

I was trying to delete an old iTunes folder and a process, named "iTuneshelper.exe", was apparently running in the background. I stopped the process and deleted the folder without a problem...

I almost feel like an idiot for not trying this earlier, but it could be this is the cause of your problem too.

Remains to be seen if "iTuneshelper" will return the next time I reboot my PC... and the folder with it.
