How about copying the data that you require from your desktop HDD onto a USB memory stick (you can get 16GB models now) and then plugging this in to your laptop?

You can only move your user data, not the system. And you cannot move large amounts of data via the WiFi - at least not in any reasonable amount of time. Take the advice of Dwarf and use an USB stick or an external disk.
If you want to prevent any of this information remaining on your laptop, make changes to the data on the memory stick. Remember that you have the original version of this data on your desktop should you need to restore it for any reason. To remove any further traces of it from your laptop, install and run http://www.vistax64.com/software/86472-latest-ccleaner-version-released.html Amongst its options is one which clears your MRU lists (Most Recently Used) in your registry.

I bought a 16GB stick in the fall for $15 from Newegg. It is a Kingston. Right now they are more like $30 ( Deals2buy: USB Drives deals ). You will get a better beat for the buck if you go with an external disk. ( Deals2buy: Storage Devices deals ).
