BIOS bootup cannot read CD

I'm trying to change my boot up order, but my BIOS does not see my CD drive will only bootup from HDD.... Gateway Tech support says I must reinstall Vista 64 so that BIOS will find my CD Drive.. Does this sound like a correct way to get BIOS to recognize the CD drive?

basically nothing yet. Tech support leads me to believe I must reinstall the OS...Vista. I asked that very question if there was another way. They said no. Funny thing is, CD works fine when Vista is running. but if I ever need to boot from the CD, it won't. BIOS doesn't even give me the option to add it or change the boot order. It does see a Opitical drive, but it is not a "selectable" item on the boot order

This sounds more like something a BIOS update might fix rather than
reinstalling Vista.

A few questions:

What model PC is this?
Is it a new purchase?

Would it allow booting from CD drive before?
Anything else that might be relevant?

Download the latest update for your bios and flash your bios.. :)

Hello shelbydog25,
Have you tried to reset the CMOS ?.
Remove the CMOS battery and wait for about 10 minutes, replace and reboot.
To reset the CMOS check with your owners manual, depending on your system you may have a button at the back of your Motherboard.
You could also try removing the power lead from the PSU for five minutes.
This is a safer option than updating the Bios, but it may well come to that.

it's a NEW purchase. Gateway 4800... how do I determine the BIOS manufacturer info the conduct a reflace? Will the reflace then have the BIOS find and recognize the CD drive or is there something elese i need to do? ( I'll search for the driver info and download update?) thanks

Might be available on Gateway website or in paperwork that came with PC.
If you boot into BIOS it should tell you there too.

A program like SIW will show a lot of system info BIOS included.
