Solved Create a Gateway OEM Recovery Disc

New Member
I recently purchased a Gateway laptop M-6888U that had no software disc provided. I was told by Bestbuy to simply backup my entire drive. I wish to know is there a way to make a recovery disc that WILL install a fresh copy of vista64 or am I screwed since everyone is trying to cut corners? I know I can make a recovery disc that works IF I have a working installation of my OS. My concern is if the drive gets corrupted and my OS needs to be reinstalled I'm screwed, with my only option being to purchase a new copy of Vista.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Gruvin, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This link at Gateway will help show you how to create a set of OEM recovery discs to use to restore Vista back to factory defaults with if you are unable to from the hard drive's recovery partition. Just repeat again, and select the other option to create the Vista recovery disc and not just one for the applications and drivers disc. :)

Brink I really appreciate you looking into this so very quickly. I am impressed.

I should have included information about not having a Gateway folder to even have access to that feature. I dont know how cheesy this is, but here is a thread I started today. Actually my first thread ever. Anyway, this is a very wordy post if you have time to read it, then great. If not, I understand. It seems that my hidden partition is gone and anything that has to do with a factory reset is gone. This is a used laptop that was manufactured with Vista Home Premium but now it has Windows 7 Ultimate. It is so much simpler to do an image backup. Recovery is 30 minutes or less and it puts you right back to where you were when the recovery image was created.

Buy an external USB hard drive.
Download Macrium Reflect Free.
Run Macrium and create a full image backup.
Create the Macrium bootable recovery disc to use if you need to restore the image.

You're done.

You can continue to make additional images as you make significant changes to your system.

Thanks for your response. Im assuming that I would have to install vista again first and then follow these instructions since it has a trial version of 7 ultimate on it right now? Also will I need to reinstall the drivers since I am trying to do a clean install?

Unfortunately, yes. I don't see any other way unless you are willing to go with a Gateway Recovery DVD or DVD set. If so then check the Gateway web site to see how to order them.

Drivers should not be a problem as the Gateway web site has them.

I have looked on the gateway website and tried to find the drivers but I could not locate them for the MT6821. Was you able to locate them? Actually their website doesnt recognize that model at all. Im not sure why.

Are the drivers essential? This laptop I'm referring to is going to be used primarily for email and skype. It will be used very little. It seems to work just fine and I haven't installed any drivers yet.

In my opinion, they shouldn't be essential for the two purposes you mentioned. If you ran into video or audio problems, the drivers would be the first thing I would look at.

Look in Device Manager. If there are any yellow marks or any of the devices (Display, Network, Sound specifically) are not identified fully then yes, the device drivers are necessary. The computer will run better and be less likely to fail with the correct drivers installed.
