Solved Vista repair does not work

Hello,

I have a Hp Pavilion notebook with Vista Home Premium. The PC boots fine, but when I log in to the user account with the password the screen turns all white.
I also tried in safe mode and in safe mode as soon as I put in the password in the screen turns all black. It says "safe mode" in the corners and the top of the screen says:
"Microsoft® Windows® (Build 6001:Service Pack1)"
You can move the mouse pointer around but there is nothing to click on and the screen remains black.

I came across this forum and I followed the instructions in the tutorials on fixing Vista.
First I tried How to Do a Startup Repair in Vista and it said it was unsuccessful.

Next, I followed the directions from "How to Do a System Restore in Vista"
and it said " no restore point have been created on this computer's system disk"

Now I am trying "How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista"
but when I get to "step 10. Click on the Upgrade option" the upgrade option is greyed out. :shock:

Why am I not given the "upgrade option" and what should I do now?

Hello Joe, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The upgrade option is only available when done from within Vista. It cannot be done from boot.

You can do a factory recovery to reinstall Vista with. Scroll down to the Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager if Windows Vista is not accessible section at the link below for how if needed. This will format your hard drive and reinstall Vista back like it was the day you first used your laptop.

Are u able to open taskmanager by pressing ctrl+alt+del? if so your explorer is not starting automatically. In task manager process tab, click on new task and type explorer.exe and hit enter. Yow will have your desktop back.

Its good news that, we can fix permanently

I did the factory recovery. it took forever, but now it's running great.

I did not see this until after I reinstalled Vista, but thank you very much for the info.

The PC was running fine, so went on the Internet and the first thing I did was to start updating Vista. It was running for a very long time when it beeped a bunch of times and shut off. I restarted it and resumed the updates again it was running fine again when suddely it beeped again and shut off by itself. :confused:

Now Vista won’t start up. :mad:

This time it does not even get to the user account it goes blank after the Windows logo. all I see is a dim screen and the mouse arrow moving around. I tried pressing ctrl+alt+del but nothing happens.
I tap when it starts F8 but now I'm only getting:

Safe mode
Safe mode with command prompt
Safe mode with networking
Start Windows normally

No “last known good configuration”
I think it may be overheating. The PC was very hot and the surface of the desk it was on was also very hot.

Joe,

It could be overheating. Let it sit for a while turned off to cool off. If it runs fine afterwards, then you know it's overheating.

I blew out the dust with a can of air last night and this morning I tried to start the PC but we still get the same problem.
I think I have run the "HP Recovery Manager" (from post #2) once more. :sa:

I did not run the HP Recovery Manager, I found some diagnostics in the BIOS
that check the HDD so I ran that, it found some S.M.A.R.T. error on HDD 1 and said HDD 2 was good but Vista is on HDD 1. (This Notebook has 2 hard drives)
The PC still does not boot to Vista. :cry:

So I have ho choice but to run HP Recovery Manger again.

I ran the "HP Recovery Manager" once more and now the PC is running great, but I'm very worried about that "S.M.A.R.T. error" on the HDD.
Is there some type of hard drive diagnostics I should run to see if the hard drive is what's causing the problem?

I'm assuming that you used the test towards the bottom of this link at HP.

What was the full SMART error that it gave you? We might be able to look it up and tell you what it means and if it is bad news or not.

Joe,

As a test to see if it may be just a bad sector, run chkdsk on the drive, then run the diagnostic again to see if still gives you the same error.

Does your laptop have the "ProtectSmart Technology" built into the system? If it doesnt did your laptop bounce or vibrate at any time recently? You may have damaged your disk sectors with the bounce. The HP ProtectSmart stops the heads from moving on the disk to protect it in case of shocks and sudden movenments. My Pavilion Dv7 has this built in...the busy light turns red instead of the normal when activated and then turns off when it considers itself to be stable.

Also in your BIOS run the hard drive test...even the short one and then the long one. It will test your drive for harware errors on the disk. I had a drive with bad sectors on my old Compaq and the test failed instantly...thats a somewhat easy way to test the consistancy of the drive.

Was the HP recovery on another drive or partition? I only have one HDD in mine and it had a second partition for the HP Recovery Manager(i deleted it after creating the hp recovery disks...whats the point to the drive when you have the disks?)...just a question.

I ran Chkdsk and after I ran the diagnostics and I get the same " S.M.A.R.T. error #1____07 "
The pc however is running great. Is this an error I should be concerned with?

Was the HP recovery on another drive or partition? I only have one HDD in mine and it had a second partition for the HP Recovery Manager(i deleted it after creating the hp recovery disks...what’s the point to the drive when you have the disks?)...just a question

The HP recovery was an another partition (E:\) but on the same Hard drive as the OS(C:\), the backup was put on a different Hard drive(D:\). (this PC has 2 HDD,3 partitions)
The backup is in a folder (MINIWINPC) 2 files Backup.001 and Backup.001.fbw.
Now I can't figure out how to restore it. I found this on HP support
HP Notebook PCs - How to Restore Backup Files Created During the F11 Backup Procedure

Step 2 says "Locate and open the MINWINPC folder on your computer, and then double-click the executable file (.exe) that was created during the backup process."
But there is no .exe file? only Backup.001 and Backup.001.fbw
