Associations to cd rom drive

I hope someone can give me a hand here. I went to open a software disc that I just put in my drive and I moved to fast or something and clicked on the wrong option on the context menu and messed up the association to my cd/dvd rom drive. Now I cant get the drive to auto start and show the icon next to the cd drive letter. It also wont run if I double click on the drive. I get an error that says: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. Now I have tried everything from exefix_vista.reg, inffix_vista.reg, exefix_cu.reg. I'm not new to computers, but this has me all messed up. I need to use that disc for school. I even tried putting a disc in for my router software and still get the same error. I don't know where to go from here. I've uninstalled my drive and drivers, I've checked with Vista repair, nothing works. I don't want to have to reload my OS if I can help it.

You might see if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before this may be able to fix it for you. :)

I have tried running that file.

I dont know what to do from here. I had this problem once before and i ran exefix_vista.reg and it fixed my cd drive. that was on another laptop. i was running vista x86 on that one, now im running x64 on this one that im having the current problem with. i dont know what to do other then reloading my OS which i dont really want to do, but it looks like no other choice. :(

I'm not certain what else you can try either other than a reinstall.

Be sure to leave System Restore on this time though, or keep really good backups. :(
