OCing e8400 with asus mobo

complete noob.....
in an article on this forum about ocing an intel 8400 on a asusp5n-t deluxe stew2 advised "go to your tweaking tab and set the cpu,ram and AI over clocking values to manual".....I can find AI overclocking but where are cpu and ram values? please help, thanks in advance smeg

setting AI to manual should allow you to acess the values for your fsb , ram timings multiplyer and voltages

if your unsure of what your doing do more research first

if you have no..... AI ''Auto'' ''Manual'' ''Nos'' settings you wont be able to see the ''advanced options'' tab..

but these specs show you should have FULL OC ability's..??

I was just making sure you were fully aware of what your doing before you start Overclocking is very rewarding (i have a 999mhz oc and im only .2v ubove stock voltage) but it can be risky , newer boards with crash free bios and the like make the process alot less scary but you still need to be carefull or you'll be stuck with a motherboard that wont post :P

getting it to boot into windows is half the battle , once there you can start burn/stability testing

you really need to start with your cpu , underclock your ram as much as you can to take it out of the equation , then start on your cpu upping your fsb a little at a time , til you find its max clock , when thats stable you can reverse the process underclock our cpu then start on your ram till you find its max oc

then you can start getting serious with both and tweaking your voltages/timings (this is the tricky bit as this is when it really starts to heat up )

dont try overclocking on stock cooling

if you need any advice when you start with benching software etc just shout

super pi for testing the speed of your cpu test at 1 million calculations the higher your oc the faster it should finnish

prime 95. run the torture test , preferably overnight , you should have no errors both 32 and 64 bit versions here

intel burn test , this will heat your cpu up very very quickly if you can run 8 passes of this on full throttle your on to a winner

now these will most likely throw up errors or bluscreen your rig at first depending on your oc / voltages / timings etc its up to you how much you wanna tweak and how you perceive a "stable" system

some people will be happy with an overclocked system that bluscreens once a day , some with one that craps out once a week , others like me want a perfectly stable rig that will not bluscreen at all , if it does i perceive my overclock to be unstable

what im trying to say is if prime 95 throws up an error after 2 hours of testing i would think my rig to be unstable and tweak it , you might be happy with this , it doesnt mean that in real world performance your rig is gonna crap out on you every day it may not and even if it does you may be happy with this to gain the extra performance

I would if you hav'nt already disable your cpu fans auto setting in bios and let it run flat out all the time (if you dont mind the noise) this will keep your idle temps down

remember heat is your main enemy yuor aiming for the highes stable clock for memory and ram with the lowest possible voltage

dont take too much notice of your actual temps but of the distance to your TJmax or theoretical cpu max temp , the higher this is the better , and remember during normal operation your cpu will never get as hot as it does with intel burn test for example , theres apps are designed to put your cpu under extreme stress to test its stability.

Thanks again archie123...I will need those stress progs,I got my my first bsod today.I suspect my memory settings caused that.As you suggest I will under clock them and concentrate on the cpu.
