Folder will not rename.

I create a new folder and when I try to rename it the folder instantly goes back to New Folder. There is no error message. :sa:

Follow the steps:

1) Check in Advance Boot Options - Safe Mode.
2) Try to run a Virus Scan in the Computer.
3) Try to create a New User Account and Check.
4) Disable/Uninstall Security Software

Update on the same, lets try to fix.

Hello Blackhawk,

Check to see if it may not just be your mouse pointer selecting something before you had a chance to rename it by making sure that the point is directly of the New Folder that you want to rename. This has happened to me a few times.

I encountered another problem which is a 1606 error. I have done a lot of googling and I came across this. It's a question from someone on another forums. He has both problems I have and they seem to be correlated with eachother.

I've recently had Norton Anti-virus 2009 and when i went to get my live updates 3 of them wouldn't install.
I wasnt too worried about this because i figured i'd uninstall it and re-install it to see if it fixes the errors.
Instead of this being an easy task before it would finish updating i kept getting this error %PUBLIC%\Desktop\

i decided to get rid of Norton and use Avast because i dont have time to fool around, but now the problem has come back, and its stopping me from installing Windows Microsoft Office.
I cant run it from the disk so i opened the setup.exe folder as an admin to run it and i keep getting the Error: 1606 %PUBLIC%\Desktop\ message/
i cant find anything on it and all the forums i do find are for XP.

I'm also having trouble with my desktop because i cant rename my folders.
If i change the name it'll automatically switch back.
If i create a new folder and try to change the name it wont let me either.
It'll either switch back to New Folder or it'll say that folder name that i create doesnt exist.

Id appreciate it if anyone could help me
or if you know of any other sites with info related to my issue

If the tutorials above did not help, then you might uninstall Norton as a test to see if that is what is causing this for you.

Unfortunately I do not use Norton, that was his post. I use McAfee. Suggest a reinstall of that, do you? :P

Well, I would try the tutorials above first to see if they may help. If not, then temporarily uninstall McAfee as a test to see if it causing it.

I got rid of the secondary problem I had, but my first problem still is there.

I cannot rename anything. And I highly doubt it is anything relating to the file being in use. Any file no matter what, even if I just made it (like a New Folder) will not rename.

Maybe this will help... I look at the properties of the folder and it's marked as read-only. So I turn it off, but when I go back in it's back on. That seems like a problem to me.

As a test, create a new administrator account to see if you are able to while logged on to it.

If you can then just copy the files from your old user account's user folder to the new account. After everything checks out ok, then you can delete the old account from within the new one.

Didn't change anything. That's why I don't believe it's a permission error in general. I think it is some bigger error, such as the registry, which is causing problems with permission. But I'm just a pc noob. :]

Hi Blackhawk,

Before you reinstall, you might try rt click and merging this .reg file and see if that fixes the problem.

Always a good idea to create a restore point first.
