Vista Ultimate x64 Hangs

Good Evening / Morning / Other

I have a PC running Vista x64 specs-
MB Asus P5VD2-VM
CPU Core 2 Duo 6700
GPU BFG Nvidia 8600GTS
HD Seagate 500GB Sata
RAM 4 GB DDR2 (System only uses 3GB due to chipset lacking memory remap)

For the past year its been occasionally hanging at random - sometimes repeatedly each day, othertimes once every few days. I have run ram tests and its found nothing. Its not overheatring. The only other thing I can think of is the hard drive when I run seagates tools it cant complete the long tests but it does the short test - can anyone thing of any other diagnostics I can try.

Hard to tell, how old is the HDD? Have you overclocked your CPU or Ram in the Bios? if so, try using default settings to see if that gets rid of the problem. If not, go check what the correct voltage and timings for your Ram is, your board might be set to AUTO those two settings and it has them lower than what they are recommended.

I had many problems because of incorrect timings and voltages with my Ram.

Hard drive is about two years old. I havent OC'D CPU or RAM. Just had the RAM out so I could check what the correct voltage/timmings were but a quick google throws up nothing - obviously a cheap brand!!!

So, the RAM is Brandless then? if so, not a good sign and yes, CHEAPO comes to mind ;)

Have you tried looking into a Bios update from Asus for your board? What about Intel firmware? doubtful but plausible.

Also, have you monitor your CPU, Ram & GPU temps? it could be that heat is causing the sudden drop, although, heat would lead to a shut down, complete freeze or blue screen but worth a try.

The RAM modules have this printed on them 'b62urce 1.00 bp mll e186014 94v-0'. I googled that and found the module manufacturer but im still unsure of the chip manufacturer 'Ata'. I will pop them back in and fiddle with the voltages, a few pages I have been on suggest they should run at 2.2v. Bios and chipset (VIA) drivers are up to date. I monitored the heat but found it all to be well within limits.

This may sound silly, but I've used it to "fix" more than one system. Shut the PC down, unplug the power and swap the ram position...while you have the sticks out, take a pencil eraser to the contacts to clean up any oxidation.

It doesn't take much to cause intermittent problems with the data path and a simple "postion change" has cured this type of problem more than once for me...

OK removed the 2 RAM modules cleaned them up a bit and swapped them around - No hang so far. Computers been on for nearly 2 days now without a hitch, cross fingers, arms, legs and touch wood for good measure.

I think I may replace the modules with a better brand.

Ok so the computer has been on for a few days, working fine - rock solid infact. I started browsing the internet this afternoon and bang the hang was back! Im starting to think that the ram must be the issue now - what does everyone else think?
