CD drives not recognizing any disk HELP

I have found that many people are having this same problem. I have not seen any recent posts concerning this matter so maybe someone found a solution. Pointer anyone?
here is my problem:

inserting any type of disk(OEM, data, music, blank, etc) in either of the drives results in nothing happening, well, it does ask me if I would like the disk(fixated already) formatted, that goes for ANY disk.

I CAN get the cd-rom and dvd drive to work if I have at least one disk inserted on a restart. Don't know why this works. Im sure someone here does.

I hear this problem occurs on XP also and might be related to an MS update.

Any help out there?..in here?

My rig is:

Asus MVP32+
AMD Phenom Quad BE 2.6
Corsair RAM 4 gigs
Asus dvd-rom drive
Blue Ray drive
Window Vista 64 Home Premium

the First (and cheapest) thing to check with any cd/dvd read problems is the IDE (or SATA) cable changing this can often save time and money.

Your problem can be caused by corrupted drivers.

To update your drivers you need to know the name of your drive. If your unsure type msinfo32 into the vista start orb search bar and hit enter. Open the components tree and then click on CD-ROM. In the right hand panel next to Name you'll see what your drive is called. Post that here or better still take a screenshot of that info and post it and we will point you to new drivers.

Cables are fine. anyway both drives do work if they are loaded before a reboot.
here is the drive info:

they are SATA drives

Ok the info you need is:

ASUS DRW-20B1LT ATA Device
HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GGC-H20L ATA Device

For the asus one go to this link ASUSyou need to select Optical Storage then DVD-RW and then DRW-20B 1LT and then click search and download the firmware that comes up.

For your LG blue ray player go here LG and click on the software link. Then select Combo Drive and select your Operating System and then click search. Download the first one it should be called lgfw80.zip

Once you've downloaded them, run the installers one at a time and reboot if it tells you to. Once you've finished installing them, reboot your computer a final time.

Hi again stew2. seems I was a bit hasty in my joy of the firmware update. Now it seems my system has lost the ability to burn anything. I do not have the options in explorer or the two apps I use to burn - InfraRecorder and DVDfab. In explorer the burn icon is gone and in the apps any write window(box) is greyed out. any idea what went wrong? After your suggested firmware update the drives were seen by Vista so I thought all was ok until I went to burn a disk.

My Computer

Did the firmware update resolve the problems you first stated, does it now recognize all the disks you put in?

Is it just the ability to burn disks thats now missing?

My Computer

Mmmmm. I'v never personally encountered this problem so maybe someone else can help you. But if i was you id do the following:

Click the vista start orb and in the search bar type gpedit.msc and hit enter. This will open the Local Group Policy Editor. In the left pane click on User Configuration then Administrative Templates then Windows Components then Windows Explorer

Now to the right find the key: Remove CD Burning Features and double click on it and select Enable then click OK then reboot. Once back at the desktop go back into the Local Group Policy Editor and go to the Remove CD Burning Features again but this time set it to Disabled then click OK and reboot.

This should bring back the ability to burn. If it doesnt then uninstall any burning software you have installed as they may be causing conflicts then reboot and try the vista built in burn.

I dont have the gpedit.msc with Vista Home premium. I tried finding the LGPE with mmc but could not find it. I did find Local Users and Groups but it would not allow me to snap it in. Any idea how I get to the options you suggested with Vista HP?

I've done a system restore to a point before the firmware update with no change. all the burning apps have also been reinstalled with no change.

My Computer

Damn Microsoft and there 1000 different versions lol.

OK click on the vista start orb and type regedit then enter. Navigate your way to to the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane, right ckick on the blank space and choose New to create a new 32-bit DWORD value. Name the new value name as NoCDBurning, and assign its datavalue as 1

Now exit the registry and reboot. When back at the desktop open regedit again and go back to the data you just changed but this time use the Value Data 0 and then exit the registry and reboot.

As you've used system restore you may need to install those firmware updates again.

Hi Stew2
I did the registry edit as instructed. still could not get my apps to burn. then a few days later it worked. i burned several CD and they were fine. then Bang! neither drive will burn again. i did just install SP2. worked after that for awhile.
In the burning apps(Infrarecorder mainly) my drives show up but the boxes for write speed and write method are greyed out but say "maximum" and "not available", respectively.
WTF?

To me it sounds like you are getting software conflicts so id do the following:

  1. Uninstall any burning software you have then reboot
  2. Click the link in my sig and do steps 3, 4 and 5 then reboot
  3. Open control panel then device manager. Open up the DVD/CD-ROM drives and right click on each drive and then click on Uninstall then switch off your pc
  4. Check the cables to the cd drives are secure
  5. Boot up your pc and install the firmware updates i gave you before, then reboot
  6. Check to see if you can burn with Vista's built in burner (if you can then install your burning software and check to see if you can burn with them)

Alas, nothing nada...don't even get the explorer burn option now and the windows in the burn apps are still greyed out. Full reinstall of Vista?

My Computer

Mmmmm. A full reinstall seems drastic just to get the burn option back but im out of ideas lol.

Perhaps someone else here knows of a fix for this problem?

Anyway, now is actually a good time to reinstall vista as Service Pack 2 has just been released so if you click the link in my sig you'll get the links for sp1 and sp2 that you should install. If you do decide to reinstall vista follow my little guide in my signature and when you get to installing your burn software make sure that the vista built in one works properly before you install the one you want to use.

My Computer

Well I installed Deepburner and now both drives will burn! Also the explorer burn icon is back but I have not tried it yet. Lets hope it stays this way after a restart! Thanks so much for your help. It really is good to know that people like you are out there.
cheers
Anthony

My Computer

No problem, although you fixed it yourself lol

Even after uninstalling an app its probably left behind registry entries etc that are causing conflicts with other burn apps. Im pretty sure its this thats causing software conflicts so you should check the Infrarecorder forums to see if there are similar problems or continue using Deepburner which is probably easier.
