Email attachment association error message

I get an e-mail with an attachment..I try to open the attachment and I get the following error message:
" This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action--create an
association in Folder Options Control panel"
What do I do now ? How do I create an Assiciation ? How can I open the attachment ?

Hello Shopro, and welcome to Vista Forums.

What is the file extension of the attachment? Do you have a program installed that supports opening that file extension type? For example, if you have a .DOC file, you will need to have MS Word installed to be able to open it.

Please post back with this, and I'll be happy to see what I can do to help.

Shawn: Appreciate the prompt response. Unfortunately I do not have one of those e-mails with the attachment available, I usually just delete them when the error message appears. So at this time I cannot tell you what the file extension is/was. My OS is Vista Basic, I do have Word, but I am sure it also is Basic ! Short of going out and buying Word and spending a few hundred dollars, is there anything else you can suggest. To be honest, all the the mail that I get with the problem are nonsense, that I can comfortably live without..jokes, pictures of sunsets, etc.

Some great free ones that can open .doc files is World Viewer and OpenOffice. You can find them and other programs for other file extension types at the link below.
