Star on My Vista

Please help: I have a new Vista 64bit version that has now developed an unauthorized star in the tool bar bottom right. It is in control of the computer. It will allow me to only reboot and use websites but does not allow me to do search of programs etc. Any help to rid my computer of this hitchiker is greataly appreciated. I am by no means a computer guru.
