Vista reverts back to Windows Standard/Classic theme after restart

Hi, i'm kinda desperate atm. My laptop has this annoying habit of reverting back to windows standard/classic theme after almost every restart. I said almost as after 2/3 and sometimes even more, my aero theme correctly appeared. After another restart right after that, the problem occurs all over again.

The search function in the start menu and windows explorer also 'failed to initialize' when in the said windows standard/classic mode.

I figured that this might have something to do with my user profile as I have the 'User Profile Service service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded' problem once very recently but I've fixed it using the tutorial in this forum. The windows standard/classic theme problem had been on for quite a while back, before the user profile problem.

Before all this happened, I've had this 'C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable...' problem. I fixed that by copying all my files and folders in my C:\Users\[Username] folder to the location above and replacing all the files including desktop.ini. It is only after this that I've had the windows standard/classic theme problem.

I couldn't help but wonder if somehow my user profile has got something to do with it? Windows system restore could not fix this problem.

By the way, I'm using a modified aero theme at the moment, using TuneUp Utilities 2009 on a Vista Home Premium 32bit Acer 5920G laptop.

I would deeply appreciate any help for this poor soul!

I haven't used Tune Up, but first thing I would try is to undo all the mods. and see what happens.

Well, I've always trusted TuneUp since I've used it for ages and it has never gave me any problems so far and this problem had only occured recently, but I'll give it a shot anyway - who knows, and I'm desperate, so yea. I'll update the results soon.

Edit: Gary, that didn't work - I'm updating this after 3 consecutive restarts :( Changed back to the original Vista Aero theme and that didn't work. Uninstalled TuneUp, and that didn't work too. SIGH.

Hi everyone, I've just figured out the darn programme that was causing all of the above probs for me - Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

So I've reverted back to KIS7 which basically solved everything - no more the dreaded windows vista standard theme!

There must be something with the Vista 32bit and KIS09 combo.
Was kinda disappointed though, I would've thought Kaspersky would've improved the programme's compatibility with Vista 32-bit systems... anyway just wanna say thanks for all the help!

Hi,

I am facing the same error, after restart my vista theme resets to classic theme. Tried to perform the steps provided as per posts

I've had copied my file in 'C:\Windows\System32 config\systemprofile\Desktop

from my C:\Users\[Username] folder to the location above.

But i am not able to copy the file ntuser.dat.LOG1 file from my users location.

And finally not succeeded.

Need help from anyone please. Feeling hard for last 1 year to have this bug in vista home.

The ntuser.dat log will be in use that is why it didn't get moved.

Can I just ask a question what is ntuser.dat? because I have quite a few of them in my user area I didn't delete them Just in case but I have hidden them

Also there are other extensions as you might see like ntuser.bak and ntuser.dat.LOG2

They are your user profile settings for your logged on account. Every time they are changed a new file is made. They store things like International Settings,Colors,Screen savers,Sound,Cursors, etc.
Every time you defrag or change a program setting another file is made.
Best thing to do with them is right click, properties, hide.
If you need to transfer them to another account, copy, don't cut.

I have in the past kept the first (default) and last and deleted the rest.
Don't remember why I stopped, may have been a bad experience,I just don't remember. I hide them now.
