vista can't format my dvd-rw or dvd-r one is sony other is maxell and it doesn't read them either
help i want to burn home video

Your Optical drive may be dying. Either that, or the DVD's (If previously written to and erased) may be corrupted. Try a new DVD.
If it does it with a new DVD:
Try unstalling the drive in Device manager, and removing the drive, then re-install it and let the drivers re-install.
Also Make sure you have a DVD RW drive- not a CD RW/DVD ROM.
