HELP - Lost Word doc on Vista - USB, overwritten file

Hello
I was editing my assignment which was saved on my USB but not the hard drive (silly I know but it's not my computer), and when I tried to save it to my USB, around 5 different messages flashed up saying bad things (unfortunately I can't remember what), and then word closed, and all of the work that I had done had disappeared and was replaced with an earlier version of the document.
I've downloaded Recuva, and used it on my USB, and I think I have found the documents that I want, but one of them is unrecoverable because it's been overwritten by the word file on my USB. Another is recoverable but when I tried to open it it said that the file might be corrupt.
I really needed this information today, is there anythign you can think of to do to get access to a file that was overwritten? There aren't any hidden files? Or is it all gone?

the only way to truly "delete" files on a drive is to overwrite it. If it has been overwritten it is not recoverable.

A disk forensic expert might be able to recover it, though.

Do you think there's any possibility, even though the file that I wanted has been overwritten on my USB, that it's lurking around on the hard drive somehow?

Maybe this will help:
