q9xxx Quad cores

What are the temps like on the 45nm intel q9xxx series, more specifically the q9550. Since i now have the capability to use 45nm procesors in my board, thought i might as well go for one. But before i do, i need to know if i would have to invest in a new heatsink.

Right now im getting 35 degrees on my e6700 dual core & around 55 on load (thats a 65nm dual core on air cooling btw) So i assume i would i see similar temps, even tho i would be using a quad, with the 45nm shrink?

Well what cooler have you currently got?

I have a 9550...A couple of months old now.

Its under a Thermalright 120, which is a pretty solid cooler.

Runs at about 35 degrees celcius @ idle.
And about 44 under load. Dependant on ambient temps.

My case however, moves a hell of a lot of air.

well ive got a zalman 9700-nt, with the nzxt lexa case so i shouldnt have much problems then.

I feel I should Qualify this somewhat.

Right now, my temps are 35,28,35,36 with a 45 degree GTX280...all running idle, with an ambient temp of maybe 19 degrees. Fans are set to mid level, for some noise reduction.

Under load, that jumps to 44,42,40,41 running prime for ten minutes under the same conditions. 46/42/43/44 after twenty minutes.

Higher ambient temps send it much higher though. This room gets hot in summer. Mid twenties hot. If not more. Load temps DO break 50 degrees. I think the highest I have recorded is about 55. Still fine in my opinion.

Bear in mind that those temps are with an overclocked cpu running at 3.8.

Idle temps are pretty much the same as stock, and load temps are a bit higher. The cooler the ambient temp is, it just makes all the difference.

When I was looking into the original purchase, I most definately found some really, really inaccurate information. Perhaps not inaccurate, but I was reading reports of varying temps...perhaps 10 degrees variance from my own. I believed my chip was running way too hot. But now I think its pretty much on the money.

Anyhoo.... I hope this helps. When I first installed, I was quite concerned about the temps I was getting.

Yep, you should be fine. You'll probably get roughly the same temps as your current chip.

Like moirae, my Q9550 is also at 3.8 and gets very similar temps to his at idle and load with a noctua nh-u12p. However my cooler needs to be reseated as my core 1 can get about 8-9 hotter than the rest of the cores at load.

Current idle temps: (ignore core 1,3,4 - stuck sensors )

man thats sweet 3.8 & still not much hotter than my current cpu. I dont plan to overclock, so i should have no problem. Might even consider going for 3.0ghz quad if i can get it cheaper.

You could probably get quite a good overclock out of it with that cooler. I use the same cooler and overclocked my CPU from 2.6 to 3.0GHz and the temp difference wasn't even that noticable.

even on that 9700.. you should be ok. But I'd recommend you get something like the TRUE, or even a low cost GREAT cooler like the Xigmatek s-1283 and get the Q9550 and you'll be blown away with how well it runs.

Or, now the prices are down. get the Q9650. Guaranteed that it is a E0 stepping. (The run cooler than the C1 stepping that some 9550's have) and more than likely you take take the Q9650 near 4.0 Ghz with decent temps. mine sits at 4.0 Ghz with 27c temps.. but that is under water.
