Vista 64 not seeing USB devices

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

I recently upgraded to Vista Home Premium 64. It's not an upgrade disk but a full version on a DVD with SP1 (so I upgraded in the sense that I'm not using XP anymore). There are a couple of annoying things that keep happening.

First, Vista isn't recognizing USB devices, specifically my Ipod, my thumb drive, and my external HDD. They don't even come up in Windows or Disk Management. It's like they're connected (my external HDD has the power led on, but no activity) but invisible. I can't figure out any way to force Windows to see them. Is there any way to do that? Is there a problem with my USB drivers? Any other suggestions.

The only surefire way to get my Ipod recognized is to attach it first, without opening any other programs, after a start-up or a re-start. If I start my computer and work on it for a while and decide to attach a USB device, Windows doesn't see it at all. Obviously, re-starting each time I want to plug in a plug-n-play device is unacceptable.

Any advice/solutions are appreciated.

go to control panel>device manager, there u will find universal serial bus controllers. Expand it now plug your usb drive, now u will find usb mass storage device. It will be highlighted with yellow color, Right click on that and click uninstall.

Unplug your usb device and plug it again.

Let me know the result :)

Thanks for the reply, delphin!

And thanks for the idea but, alas, it didn't work. I plugged the external HDD in and it lit up (indicating that it has power) but didn't do anything. Windows didn't see it at all. It's almost as if the port wasn't even seen.

Would uninstalling and reinstalling all my USB ports be an option? Or could it be a problem in that I'm using an external USB hub (it's a Belkin 7-port model since I have a whole bunch of USB devices now).

If this helps: plugged into the back of my computer (i.e. on-board USB ports) are my keyboard and mouse, the external hub, and my HDD (I don't keep that plugged in all the time since it slows down boot times). On the hub, I have my game pad, my webcam, and I used to have my Ipod permanently plugged in there.

The only device that showed up, named, in the Device Manager was the webcam. Everything else was a Generic USB Hub, USB Root Hub, and USB Composite Device (along with the other standard stuff).

Any other ideas? I'm kicking around the idea of uninstalling of my USB ports and controllers and re-installing it all. I'm not sure if that'll be a permanent or a temporary solution.

I'd suspect that you haven't installed the chipset drivers for your motherboard. It appears that Vista didn't find a good enough match for them. You can find them at the manufacturer's website (the system manufacturer if it's a pre-built system and the motherboard manufacturer's site if it's a custom build). Be sure to get the 64 bit version.

That's a problem: my board is older (Asus A8N-32 SLI Deluxe) so the nForce 4 chipset isn't supported anymore. I'm using the v15.00 drivers for that chipset, which is the latest available (theoretically, they work with a 64-bit OS).

Thanks for your reply, though. :-)
