Greetings,

I attempted to reinstall Vista Home Premium 32bit to my laptop. It fails to do so. I have attempted startup repair with no success. Any help is greatly appreciated

I will help you-

Do you have a Vista DVD or Recovery Disk(s)?
Does it not see the Disk, and instead Boot to Windows? (you may have to Enter the BIOS setup and change the Boot order- Most systems with recovery Partitions will not by default boot off disk)
Is it unable to detect your Hard drives? (If you have SATA drives you must install 3rd party driver to Install Vista)
How are you trying to reinstall, and why does it fail?

Hi

Are you attempting to do this on a seperate partition from the one you currently have Vista installed on? Or are you using a different machine right now and the laptop is sitting without a working OS?

If you have a working Vista OS on the laptop now and are attempting to install a fresh copy on another partition, there may be a setup error log written to the current OS that can tell us why the install is failing.
Also, do you get any error information on the screen when it fails? If so please post anything it says, like a stop error code for instance.

Let us know more and we can help better.

Are you using SATA drives? and do you have anything hooked up to your system (besides keyboard and mouse) when you try to install?

What is your model?

I believe they are SATA drives, nothing else hooked up and it is a DELL Inspiron 1720

Have you tried Installing the Driver Disk ? Apparently this is a commom problem with your Notebook.
I suggest that you Install Vista from a Vista DVD, and load the SATA drivers at 3rd party prompt off disk or thumbdrive. For your HDD

Here is you SATA HDD driver (needed for any O/S Install):http://support.dell.com/support/top...plash?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~mode=popup&file=205611

I've been trying to reinstall Vista on my Dell Inspiron 1720. It goes through all the stages up to the step where it says it is completing the installation, but will not go past that point. Eventually it goes to a black screen with the mouse pointer and does nothing else.
Any suggestions?

Have you run the extended hard drive diagnostics to rule out a failing drive? F12 at powerup.

Didn't know about this, but I'll try it. Also thinking about trying drivers too.
It does sort of act like the hard drive isn't spinning when it's sitting at completing installation. Had this problem after SP1 installed and it turned out that SP1 has corrupted or deleted my hard drive's drivers. I'll try the diagnostics too. See what I get. Ironically, my 1 yr. warranty expired 02-07-2009..lol

Everything tested fine on the diagnostics. So on the first screen of Vista I clicked on install drivers, popped in the drivers disc and reinstalled the drivers for the hard drive, and everything was fine after that.

Re-install vista after formating - DELL COMMUNITY
You need to install the SATA driver before it will continue. On an installation setup page there is an option to load drivers. Choose that option. Put in the Dell Resource cd and point it to the SATA driver.

You can also go into bios by pressing F2 to enter setup. Once in setup tab down to Onboard Devices then down to SATA Operation. At the top choose ATA and then press esc. Save and exit changes. You can install windows. Once you have windows installed you need to install the SATA driver and go back into the bios again to change it back to AHCI. This works with SATA. If you do not change this back your system will run slow.

Ps- your problem would have been solved yesterday had you supplied you model# and/or filled out your 'my system specs" as is recommended. Anyways, Good luck!

Did that (it put me back to the window of choosing a partition to install on) and am attempting install Vista now.

Delete ALL partitions (if not using a recovery Partition), and re-install Vista into the unpartitioned Space for best results.
Recovery Partions are images-if you partitioned your drive, and/or made it smaller than the original size of the disk Image- It will fail to Install (as the volume will be too small)

If install on the off chance still fails, do the disk diagnostic (F12), and if ok, go into BIOS (F2), and change your HDD from AHCI to ATA (save), and Install - Do not forget to load the SATA driver after installation and change the HDD back to AHCI!!!

My experiance with reinstallation of windows on a dell PC

My experiance with reinstallation of windows on a dell PC
I lost my windows reinstall cd once and this is how I was able to reinstall the OS without spendin alot of money. Use the disc that came with your Dell computer to reinstall windows, or order a new one.

Pre: Make sure you download the Ethernet and / or Wireless Networking driver from http://support.dell.com and save it on a disk, flash drive, CD etc.
A: Look at the Windows Product Key sticker on your Dell PC. Write down the version of Windows.
B: Take your Dell Windows Reinstallation CD/DVD and insert it into the cd/dvdrom drive.
C: Press F12 during bootup. Choose boot from CD/DVDRom
D: Follow onscreen instructions and reload windows.
(If you dont have a Reinstallation CD/DVD, you can go to: http://www.oemsoftwaresource.com or Ebay for a replacement.)
The Second Step: Follow windows Prompts and Reinstall Windows
The Third Step: Reinstall the Network drivers then go to http://support.dell.com and download the rest of the drivers for your PC. Once all the drivers are downloaded you can install them one by one.

Now your system should be Completely clean and new!
