Vista not rendering PNGs

Hi everyone,
A few days ago Windows Explorer stopped showing thumbnails for all image files (JPGs, GIFs, and PNGs are the ones I use the most). Im pretty sure Ive tried every single method I could find on the web to revert this behavior: Tweaked Windows to "Best Appearance" and unchecked "Use icons, never thumbnails"; cleared the thumbnail cache, etc. At last I downloaded and ran some .reg files that solved the issue for all files except PNGs. To make it worse, it now seems that the problem affects all applications that have "Windows" on their names (these are: Windows Explorer, Windows Help, the Windows Live suite, etc.). Other application can render PNGs without trouble. See it yourseleves:

I dont know what else to do, please help.

Hello Jerm, and welcome to Vista Forums.

See if using OPTION TWO in this tutorial can help fix the Help and Support images.

Next, double check to make sure that you have Windows Photo Gallery set as the default program with all of it's associations set to it as well.

Well, I tried both methods but no luck :confused:

Here's a reg file to restore the default PNG registry settings. Hopefully it will restore those images for you.

Thanks for the script, Shawn. I ran it and got this error message:

Translated (best I could do):
"Can not import [FILE LOCATION]\Default_PNG.reg: Not all data was correctly written to the Registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

Since this only a few days ago. See if you can do a System Restore using a restore point dated when they did display properly to see if it may be able to fix it for you.

Did you by chance use a registry cleaning program before this happened? If so, you might check with that program for a undo option to see if that may help. If not, then it may be time for a clean reinstall.

I used "Enhance my Vista", which has a registry cleaner, perhaps that broke something. I now see that it has a registry backup tool which I wish I had used.

In case I need to reinstall the OS, is there a way to have my files exactly as they are right now, that is some sort of special backup or something? Because what I always do is burn my files and then copy them again.

For only backing up files, you can just copy them to a DVD, USB drive, or some other media to back them up and just copy them back when ready.
