Startup Repair Not Worked

Startup repair has run several times now without success and on checking the details the only problem noted was this:

Root cause found:
-----------------
System volume on disk is corrupt.
Repair action: File system repair (chkdsk)
Result: Completed successfully. Error code=0x0
Time taken=681272 ms
-----------------------

Does this mean it was repaired? and if so, why can I still not boot up even in safe mode?

Any suggestions please as I haven't done a backup recently and am desperate to get at my files to do this.
Cheers

Disk corruption is very bad and usually results in need for re-install of Vista (sometimes caused by malware/improper use of a reg cleaner)
I suggest you backup all your User Data as it may result in a non-bootable system.

Do a full defrag and check for bad sectors on the disk, and attempt recovery

In safe mode, copy the "User" Folder under Computer to an external source- this will perserve your data.

Here is how to check you disk and perform advanced scanning/repair:

You can also try a repair reinstall which will leave your data in a file called "windows.old"

What exactly happens when trying to boot , when exactly does it stop/hang? whats onscreen at the time? does it automatically reboot and get stuck in a loop?

Then if he is unable to boot up, he needs to place Vista O/S disk in drive, restart, hit any key to boot from disk (at prompt), access advanced recovery options and try to repair boot file, or perform a system restore to a point before the corruption occured (if said restore point still exists), If this fails he can attempt a repair reinstall (as suggested in post #2). if this cannot be done, he will have to perform a destructive re-install which will result in data loss.

I have a Gateway laptop and my computer has an option called recovery with automatic data backup which installs a new copy of Windows from the d recovery partition and backups all of your files, that way,you won't lose any of your files-I had to do this a few months ago on my computer. You press F8 when starting your computer, click the highlighted "Repair your computer",choose keyboard layout, then choose your user name, then it should take you to a screen that contains recovery options. At the bottom of the list of options, you may see Recovery Manager. Click on Recovery Manager, and that may take you to a screen that shows Full Factory Recovery or Recovery With Automatic Data Backup. Your Gateway Laptop may be different though.
