Vista Home Premium 64 just freezes

My system specs are detailed in my profile
I would really value some help as have an intermittent but annoyingly persistent fault with new computer system
It keeps freezing and has to be re-started using restart switch. There does not seem to be a pattern to the freezing that I can spot. It happens at least once a day, sometimes 4-5 times and the longest without was nearly 2 days (when I thought the problem had gone!). It can happen when browsing using firefox or IE. It can happen when using documents or playing PC games (A Vampyre Story and The Path)
Initially after re-boot the system had to be repaired using the Vista CD but now it simply boots to option for safe mode or start windows normally. The perfromance monitor simply shows system not shut down properly,
Have removed u-torrent, and peripherals except broadband connection (BTHomeHub 2) and wireless keyboard and mouse but to no avail.
I use McAfee for security and since most recent upgrade have to manually start windows defender using command prompt (but think that is separate problem?)

BTW by freezing I mean that everything suddenly stops responding and nothing works including any key combos or mouse. Therefore can't access task manager

Any help gratefully received

:)

Hello gecko,

Welcome to the forum.

Firstly if it is new you have the option to return it to the dealer and let them fix this under warranty.

Otherwise type Mem in the start search, select the memory diagnostic tool, accept the UAC prompt select restart now and check for problems. Let the memory check run for long time to see if any faults are found with your RAM.

Check all connections inside your PC are tight and that all components are sitting properly, and that all fans are turning.

Make sure that all drivers are installed and are up to date.

Scan for virus's and spyware

Check that you have the latest BIOS installed Make sure you know what you are doing should you attempt to update it

I hope this helps

I have a similar problem. My Vista 64 Home Premium freezes quite often, but there is some pattern:
- 90% of freezing occurs during first 5 minutes from starting the system
- almost every day Firefox windows go white (other programs do it much less frequently) for 1-2 minutes and then either everything goes back to normal, or it stays like that forever (for at least 30 minutes, I didn't have more patience)
- there are lots of short (1 second to 1 minute) freezes during which if I press Alt+Ctrl+Del the login screen usually appears after a very long delay, precisely at the moment when everything goes back to normal
- the mouse cursor always works during freezes

I have done quite a lot to get rid of those problems, the major points are:
- I have the latest BIOS
- I have the latest Vista upgrades
- I have the latest version of drivers for all hardware
- I have tested a few graphics cards, I'm sure the graphics card is not the cause of the problem
- I have a fresh install of Vista 64 (after each experiment I'm using Ghost to revert to a fresh system)
- I don't have any viruses or any malware
- All internal connections inside the computer are reliable
- It doesn't matter if the system is overclocked or not
- I have tested practically all the hardware using different diagnostic software and everything was OK

THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT is that I have also Windows XP installed on another partition and everything works perfectly! The freezing occurs only in Vista 64.

Does anyone has ANY idea of what could be wrong?

Thanks Pooch

Would like to avoid sending system back if possible
mem diagnostic tool found no problems
I assume driver up to date as new system
those that I have tried seem to agree
scans all normal
wouldn't want to ?flash bios as not confident in this process
Have also run chkdsk and sfc as described in tutorials on this site
Found some corrupt files but not sure what they mean or how to replace as no idea where good files might exist
This is the report of corrupt files:

The question how did you guys install Vista 64bit?
Did you install necessary IDE/RAID 64bit drivers prior to installing Vista?
Google and find out somehow what the hell pnrpnsp.dll is? From reading the error it is an PeertoPeer dynamic link library file which is associated with networking.

Interesting... Yesterday I reinstalled all SATA and RAID drivers for my Asus P5Q3 and now the most frequently freezing program is no longer Firefox, but Windows Mail, it freezes and goes white very often. Firefox freezes too. So the problem must be with the RAID drivers.
Gnys, I installed RAID drivers straigh after installing Vista64 on a clean hard drive.

(I know this thread is old, but I'm having the same problem and have the same question.)

Dumb Question: When the OP posted his/her log, many of the listings reference an AMD 64 processor. If you look at the OP's system, it is an Intel processor. Any possibility that could be a cause?

My scan log looks similar to the OP's.

Thanks,

Mike
