multi page .tif documents

HELP!

I got my computer twith Vista on it this summer and could no longer view multi page .tif files. I need to be able to do this for my job. My old computer had XP and it used MS fax and picture viewer, or something like that. I used this forum in September to figure out my problem, and someone instructed me on a download at Microsoft that would fix this problem. I think it is Microsoft Document Image Writer, but I could be wrong. This fixed my problem. Now, for some reason, my computer has defaulted to QuickTime and it will only allow me to view one page. I can't remember what program I used before (whether it was the Image Writer or not), and even so, I don't know how to get it to default to another program. I have tried to search previous posts to get the answer to my post from September 2008, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

I'm having a BAAAD Monday.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

There's a great program for all image formats.

Irfanview.

I suspect there's a multitude of other programs able to view, resize, print, etc. multi-page format .tiff files.

Good luck!

Check within irfan view, on the tool bar for an arrow icon pointing up and down in green. These should let you switch through the different pages.

Also, ensure that you're viewing a multi-page tiff and not a single page tiff. I know that seems a little rudimentary, but you never know...no insult intended.

Kind regards,

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but I sure feel like one. Let me give you a little information. I'm not getting the toolbar when I try to open an item with this program.

I am a paralegal that does social security disability work. Their files are all electronic - no more paper. So when they send me files, it is on CD. The images are in .tif format. I have set my computer so that .tif documents use irfanview as a default viewer. However, when I click on an item, this is what happens (and yes, these are multiple pages. I have viewed these documents before - but thanks for the suggestion). I put the CD in. It runs automatically. The first screen has a menu to choose from. It appears to open in internet explorer as the toolbar at the top is identical and there is an IE icon in a browser. I click on the document index link, which is the list of documents that I can look at. Each document is a link. The list pops up. When I click on a document link, a new window appears and the QuickTime Player icon appears in the window as it loads. When it is done, page one of the document appears in a tabbed window, like when I am on the internet. In the browser window is E:\docs\1B.tif with an irfanview icon next to it. Below, on the tab, is the same thing with an IE icon next to it. The toolbar is the google toolbar that I use online. I do NOT get an irfanview toolbar and I don't know why. Because of this, I cannot get to any other pages of the document.

Do you have a clue about how to help me?

Thanks for your efforts so far!

Don't fret about not being knowledgeable yet, the fact that you're willing to learn clearly sets you apart from the masses. :)

Based on your description, the CD has an autorun .html file, which keeps everything that's going on within Internet Explorer. Which is potentially OK!

If the files are on the CD, perhaps if you open Irfanview and then File>Open and browse to the CD and its contents you might find the actual .tiff files on the CD.

This might get you viewing the files today, and a workaround to the problem.

So obviously there's another possible fix, and that's to uninstall quicktime. I don't know how important that program is for your needs. Internet Explorer has built in abilites to view image formats, but I don't think it does well with multi-page .tiffs. Ack, my ignorance is showing.

I think your best, and easiest method is to just browse the files on the CD and locate the files you need to view, and then use Irfanview to open them. If you use the IE interface on the CD you'll remain inside IE for the whole proceedure.

I hope my comments can help you.

I just figured it out just before I saw your reply. Thanks for your patience and the time you spent to help me. When I used XP, I just put in the CD and everything happened automatically. Your way works and that's all that matters!

Thanks, and have a wonderful day!:D

As a psychologist medical expert I had this same problem just yesterday. I solved it for the time being by opening the Index file on the CD of Social Security records with Microsoft Word.

At that point by pressing Ctrl and clicking at the same time on the exhibit files I was able to open them. Word did this by opening another program which allowed me to page through and enlarge the pages as well. It worked almost as well as when I was using Windows XP.
