Upgrading RAM in laptop, quick question about the RAM size/total, etc...

So, I bought this laptop with Vista Home Premium on it a couple years ago I think, it was a graduation gift so idk), but it only had 1gb of RAM, why they did that is beyond me, anyways, I found the type of RAM I need to buy, but my question is would it even support 2 sticks of 2gb RAM or no? I can't find anything on the model of the laptop so I'm not sure.

It's an HP dv6000 series laptop, 2 memory slots with 512mb each slot. I'm thinking of getting 2 2gb sticks for it and using Vista Ultimate x64. Will that work or is over 2gb of memory unsupported for my laptop?

i think you are limited to 2 Gig of memory, but to double-check, go to crucial.com and run the memory configurator.

Oh, that sucks. 2gb is hardly enough to run Vista Ult. -_- or would I be fine? And is it 2gb of RAM or 2gb total memory?

Also, I wouldn't be able to overclock the laptop would I? There's a 2ghz AMD Turion 64 Mobile in it with some Nvidia gfx card, don't know which one yet as I never really use it lol. I'm just wondering if I should even upgrade it and go buy a new laptop since the battery on this is only at like 30% TOTAL charge left. Doesn't you lose all ability to use laptops when their batteries die completely or am I just hearing things?

Well, I've ALWAYS ran off the ac adapter, never even used the battery but for some reason it's draining it's total life. Could that be because it's plugged in 24/7/365 and left on?

no, i wouldnt think the battery would drain, as long as the AC adapter is plugged in. i guess eventually they need to be replaced.

If you have never ran the laptop from the battery then you may have wiped it out.
I would advise running down the battery and then recharging it a couple to times.
The problem with laptop batterys is that if you only half charge them or partially charge them then they can forget how much of a charge they can hold.

Vista will run on 2GB, however if you have XP on the laptop then I would stick with that, what are you going to use the laptop for?

Basic ****. Just for use when at the library and on the road mainly. No gaming on it. But yea, just ordered the 2gb sticks. Just hope it'll be easy to take the old ones out. And the laptop came with vista home premium, don't ask it was a replacement. Anyway they would send me a XP Pro disc or no?

If you have vista on it already and you are not going to play games then I would leave it as is.
If you have a problem installing the Ram let us know.
I have installed ram on a HP pavilion but a far older model. One stick was easy to access but the other I did not even try, it would have ment taking the whole laptop apart.

I opened up the bottom bay for the memory and both sticks are right there in sight, so hopefully it shouldn't be to hard.

Should I install my copy of Vista Ult. x64 on the laptop or just use the factory disc (Home Pre.)? I don't really see a point of the Home Premium editions as they're useless I think. How would Ultimate x64 run on a 2ghz, 2gb ram laptop?

For what you are using it for I would stick with whats on it.

I think x64 will run fine on the laptop if it supports x64, when you stick the disk in and try to install it, you will get a message if it does not support x64.

Premium is just fine, you can get an x64 premium disk from microsoft for like 10 bucks if you call them. I think you need to have a store bought copy but you may only need the code off the bottom of the laptop to prove you have a legal version.

As for speed it wont be that bad, ultimate basically boots and runs at the same speed as premium, you just get more "coolness" :)

Ultimate has a bunch of security that you may not need, things like if your laptop is stolen you can make it so your drive wont boot, even on another machine. Language support( what i use it for). And some tech support options that are not available on the other versions.

If you asked me to give you ONE tip that will keep your machine running at top speed, it would be DO NOT STORE FILES ON YOUR DESKTOP.
Ever since windows 2000 (heck prolly 95)when you store files on your desktop, they have to be loaded on system startup. The GUI (windows interface, your desktop) will slow your machine to a crawl. Test it if you wanna see it, take a directory, like any game, place it on your desktop, and watch your boot times take upwards of 10 minutes.
People dont realise this and store a bunch of documents and pictures to the desktop and it slows windows boot right down to a crawl. You get the following complaint "wow this used to be so fast before, ive had it for 6 months and now it takes forever to start up?"
