Volume icon disappears periodically

My volume icon located in the notification area of the bottom tool bar, disappears mysteriously. When I notice it is gone a check of the task bar properties, shows it "grayed" out with no check mark. I must restart the PC in order to place the check , which restores the icon. Not a big deal but irritating. A forum search touched on this subject did not help. Any ideas on a permanent fix? OEM OS MS Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64 bit, PC HP m9457c. Incidentally, I have contacted HP support on other PC issues and found the service to be POOR.

Hello Hokie,

It could be from a bad or corrupted audio driver. You might see if uninstalling and installing the latest driver version may help.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

My volume icon was disabled, the box was greyed out when I went into notifications on the taskbar.

For some reason,,,, I got the volume icon back by going into the taskbar and selecting "start up menu" ( I was in classic mode) I then went in again and switch back to classic mode and the icon was back.

So, right click task bar, click properties, click start menu, there are 2 radio buttons (classic start menu), and, (start menu). I was in classic, I clicked, start-menu, looked at the view in the, start menu, then, repeated the process and clicked - right click properties on the task bar, click start menu, checked the radio button for classic menu. The volume icon reappared.

While I was in "start menu" view, I did click on a few icons, (ease of access) was one of them. I think a previous reply mentioned the ease of access icon, and perhaps some of the sub icons under it.

I am not sure which part of the entire process retrieved the volume icon but I am glad its back :)
