Task Scheduler is missing tasks

I am having trouble with task scheduler as when I open the program, it says I am missing multiple tasks. An example of a message would look like "The selected task (Insert Task here) no longer exists. To see current tasks, click Refresh." I usually wouldn't worry too much about this, but since it brings up a LOT of error messages, I feel like I need to be worried. I can also tell what some of them are like the disk defragmentator one. Can someone please tell me what's wrong or if someone has a solution to fix this? I also recall that this happened after my laptop shut down from overheating (which I know is bad and didn't mean to let it happen).

Hello Zealous, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You can try a System Restore using a restore point dated far back enough when you think all of the tasks were there.

If that does not work for you, then other than a clean reinstall of Vista, you might try a repair install.

It seems that when I try to use the system restore to go back to a certain date, it doesn't let me go past this month, Febuary. I clicked the check box to show older points from 5 days, but it didn't show far enough. Did I do something wrong or is this normal? Also will doing the system restore delete any programs I have installed or files?

Check you have following keys

HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\INTERNET
HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\RPCPROXY

If you have these keys -> remove them + restart

Hi Zealous,

Check to see if you may have what Flavius posted above. :)


System Restore points will only use up the max disk space set for them. When this is filled up, the older restore points are deleted automatically to make room for the new ones. That would be why you do not have anything older.

When you do a System Restore, it will undo any changes to system files and remove any programs installed that where not there at the date of the restore point.

Where exactly would those keys be located? Sorry not to good at finding files like those on my computer.

Thanks for the reply Flavius,
I did check in the regedit to see if I had those keys, but I didn't. But I did try to do a repair install of the OS which helped quite a lot on fixing the tasks. It pretty much reset all of them back to normal, except for ones like the disk defragmentator and an McQc Task that I don't know what it is. Here's an example of what the error looks like (sorry should have put this in earlier):

Why you ddin't? These keys are wrong and cause only great trouble with task scheduler and event viewer.Repair Install probably don't fix it because system don't treat these keys as a error because theoreticly are correct -but only theoreticly - practicly is difference.Run regedit and remove these keys!

Sorry what I meant to say was I couldn't find those keys in the regedit program. I went all the way up to RPC, but then there was no Internet or RPC Proxy keys. There was only ClientProtocols and SecurityServices keys.

Should I remove the files even though those files/tasks are actually the ones that I'm missing? Is it possible to move it to another folder just in case I still need it? Or will it read it and find it?

Remove all files + restart.After restart system programs and non-system programs rebuild own task if really need it - It is normal procedure
