Solved Start Menu Icons for Programs

I'm having some start menu trouble.

Newly installed programs usually dump their icons here "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" for some reason anything that is placed in this folder won't display on the start menu, but does via explorer

Has anyone got any ideas to overcome this?

Hello Lewys, and welcome to Vista Forums.

As a test, create a new administrator account and see if it works ok in it. If it does, then coy the contents of the C:\users\(old user account name) folders into the corresponding C:\users\(new user account name) folders. Afterwards, you can delete the old user account from within the new one.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately it didn’t work.

So I reluctantly delved into the registry, and came across this entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Folders

I just modified all the entries there, for some reason it had got all messed up and icons for the start menu were being sent all over the place.
And all is now working fine.
