Solved Hard disk volume question

In my Event properties I getting a NTFS error that the file system structure is corrupt and unusable.

It tells me this is volume\Device\ HarddiskVolume3

Question is, Which hard drive is that?

In disk manager I have the following

Disk 0 F: drive
Disk 1 D: drive
Disk 2 C: drive
Disk 3 H&P: drive
Disk 4 G: drive
Disk 5 M: drive


I guess that's kinda messed up..huh!:confused:

plus other removable cf card / sd card / mmc card drives

I need to Chkdsk the volume3.

Can anyone advise.....?

Hello Chris,

To ID the drive, you can:
  • Open a elevated command prompt
  • In the command prompt, type diskpart and press Enter.
  • Type list volume and press Enter.
  • Make note of which drive is listed as volume 3. You should see the drive letter and size to help ID it.
  • Type exit and press Enter.
  • Close elevated command prompt.

Something really strange is happening.....I'm getting a series of service shutdowns and nearly every program I open comes up with a This program has stopped working box......Eventmanager is showing loads of NTFS and Service errors....

Could it be another bad RAM stick? - surely not again.

Were you able to run Chkdsk?

You might see if doing a System Restore use a restore point dated before these errors may help.

Hey Chris.

Maybe a HDD finally dying? NTFS errors I would think would be from the HDD as that is the format system... Why would you think it would be a RAM error?
It seems to me more like a bad drive. Are all the programs that you are running all on the same drive?

Hey Shawn and Lordbob...

I ran CHKDSK and it came up with errors on my c:drive. However symptom still persisted and I received a 0x0000003b.....

I ran memtest and indeed it came up with a hardware error....I've isolated the 'problem' ram , taken it out and the systems stable again....I guess the O/S was writing to the bad ram which made it throw a wobbly....Can not rule out a failing drive, although I put my win7 hard drive(different drive) and it came up with similar error in the event viewer but was more stable when it came to shutting down programs.....

I am going to RMA the stick - It's business as usual now.

Hardware problems with RAM memory can manifest themselves in numerous ways, depending on whereabouts the problem is. If the problem is in that section of memory where system drivers are loaded, then you can get a whole series of problems, ranging from failure to boot, random BSODs, audio and graphic distortion. Sometimes, this is an intermittent problem where one or more bits swap states for no reason. The memtest program (and I recommend the bootable version) is able to check for these. Either way, if errors are being picked up, there is absolutely no way to repair RAM. It must be replaced.
