hi i am a novice at this and would apreciate any advise you could give,i have a hp vista home premium 32 bit pc.i backed up my files onto an external hardrive as i have read was the proper thing to do.i think one of my downloads was infected with a trojan horse so i tried a system restore,that did not help,so i did a system recovery back to factory settings i would now like to install my files from the external hardrive but i dont know where to begin as i understand when they get backed up on the hardrive they are in a compressed state if someone could please explain in simple terms, as i said i am still in the learning process and any help would be greatly appreciated....than you.

What external hard drive did you use?
Did you actually compress the files with a compressions program when you backed them up? If not, then they don't need to be decompressed, and thus you can just move/copy them to when they belong.

i did not compress them and its a western digital 500 gb hardrive which shows up as my-book-drive-k on the computer so if i am reading you right i just copy the files from my book and paste in drive-c,...and thanks a lot for the advise...patch41

It depends on how you backed them up.
If you just manually copied the files one by one to the "my book", then yes you could just manually copy them back the same way.
If you used the Backup Files feature in Vista, then you will need to use the method in my post above instead.

Hi patch 41,
As you have effectively replaced the old backup program when you "recovered" to factory settings, the Backup program you have now will not have the old log Files. It does not know where the backups are.
You should be able to use the Search function - step 5 in the tutorial to Browse to the location of your your backups.
