Solved Certain Vista fonts... can't delete them

Hi all,

The huge number of fonts supplied with my version of Vista (don't know if they're all the same) makes for a very long list in the font box of most of my programs. In there are a WHOLE bunch of international fonts for languages I'll never need. But the system doesn't want to let me move them out of there into some other storage folder and/or delete them - it says I need permission... I looked at the security settings for those files and they are currently owned by "trusted installer". Administrators can't move or delete these files.

As administrator, I can grant myself the permissions to let me move them... there is a warning message about possibly making harmful changes to the system... Is there any danger in doing this?

Otherwise, any way to mask these fonts without uninstalling them?

You can hide the fonts using OPTION ONE below, but I do not know if they will still show up in your program's font list. Some programs will have their own set of fonts that they use not related to the C:\Windows\Fonts.

Well, that was one of the things I thought of. Problem: with those files, you also need to go in and grant yourself permissions just to hide them...

And, it appears that hiding fonts doesn't do much good... I tried on one that did not need permission - it doesn't hide! The properties shows "hidden" checked but it s still visible... odd. MS word still sees it as well. hmmm... --ch

You can delete them using the method below, but I would recommend creating a restore point before you do. This way if you delete one that is in use by Vista, you can easily do a System Restore to get it back.


1. Open a elevated command prompt.

2. In the elevated command prompt, type cd\Windows\Fonts and press Enter.

3. In the elevated command prompt, type dir and press Enter.
NOTE: This will give you a long list of every font file in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. This is important because you will need to use the font name exactly as it is listed here below.

4. In the elevated command prompt, type del filename and press Enter.
NOTE: Substitute filename with the font file name and extension listed from step 3 that you want to delete. For example, if I wanted to delete the listed upcil.ttf font, I would type del upcil.ttf and press enter.

5. Repeat step 4 until you have deleted all of the fonts that you wanted to.

6. When done, close the command prompt.
