Vista Biz 64-bit does not recognize firewire devices.

In-house build of a Non-linear Editing workstation. Evga 780i mobo, Intel quad 2.4 Cpu, 8GB OCZ SLI DDR 800 RAM, 500GB 7200rpm OS drive (WD), 2.5TB onboard RAID 0 array, 2 PNY XLR8 8800GT video card (linked), M-Audio 1010DLT audio card, Iogear 4port Raid 5 card.

All worked fine together then today the firewire devices were no longer recognized. External devices were connected to system with USB to check and devices worked fine. Also were connected to other systems via firewire and were ok. Onboard Texas Instruments 1394 controller driver in device manager says ok. But no firewire connections get made. Neither mobo onboard firewire nor optional firewire port has any effect.

Ideas?

Do a restore to the day before this happened.

Did that and the last thing installed was the iogear card. Everything checked out fine after install. The system restore did not resolve the problem. It seems like a software problem because the devices work fine on other systems and when connected via USB. Also, the 1394 controller driver says it's working properly (yet no recognition of fw devices.)

Any other ideas?

Negative. Device manager does not detect any anomalies. Texas Instruments 1394 controller driver says driver working properly. A yellow warning triangle would be nice because it would mean the system sees the device but can't start it for some reason. I can work with that.

Update; I reinstalled the hardware and reloaded the evga mobo drivers. I connected a generic consumer dv cam and the firewire 'fired' right up from all ports. The external harddrive and VTR are still not recognized despite changing cables and reinstalling the drivers. It's definitely a windows malfunction I just can't figure out what the cause is.

Problem Solved.

Vista is off the hook. We tried out a number of different firewire devices (now I've got to put them all back) and Vista recognized them all. Apparently the firewire inputs on the two devices got fried somehow. Still can't figure out how that happened since everything was properly disconnected and reconnected. That's an entirely other issue. So far, my positive assessment of Vista Biz remains firm.

Interesting.... Sounds like a bad wire or hardware problem. Oh well, glad you got it working.
