Solved "open with" restore default

I have had this problem for awhile know and was searching around for an answer when I found this site. Im not going to type out my problem because I can't explain it very well; however, I read an older thread on the same subject and here was their problem... this is also my problem:

Hi Darren,

In your case, the .sav file extension should not have anything associated with it. You will need to unassociate it. This will show you how:

I tried downloading the Unassociate File Extention Type that Shawn posted the site for and it was also associated with a different program. So I don't know what I did, but I need to get the default back to open my programs right. Please help this is driving me crazy!

Ok.... let me have a shot here.

To set the default, right click and choose properties. In the general tab, click on the button "change" next to the Open With bar. Choose from the "recommended programs" and that should set it. To set one not on there, then open the "change" menu and select browse at the bottom, and select from the location of the file you want to open it with.

I don't know how to un-associate them, though someone here should.

Hello Mahtan, and welcome to Vista Forums.

In order to help, we need to know exactly what file extension types are not associated correctly.

From your last comment, it appears that the .exe file extensions are not associated correctly for that. At the link below, click on the .exe option in the table box to download the .reg file. After downloading it, right click on the .reg file and clock on Merge and approve. This will restore the default .exe file extensions association.

I download the file and clicked merge, but know I don't know what to do. Sorry but I don't know much about computers; maybe you could explain what to do after that in simpler terms.

Hi Mahtan,

Once you merge that .reg file into the registry, it will delete all the .exe files from Open With.

Check and see if you are still having problems.

If you are, there may other file types that need to be dealt with.

I did all that stuff; downloaded the thing and merged. But my original problem was with a zip file I was trying to download. When I try to save/ download it it opens in word pad.
