I built a new computer and my new dvd drive has not worked from day 1 help!

I just recently built a computer and everything has worked great except for my dvd drive. it would not even work when i tried to install windows. I ended up using an old dvd drive from another computer to do this. once i got windows to run i flashed my bios and got the most up to date bios, and then i deleted the upper and lower filters but still nothing! I tested the new dvd drive and another computer (which has XP) and it works perfectly fine! any ideas and what the problem is?

my mother board is a asus m3a78 pro 780g and my dvd drive is a samsung sh-s222a ide
my os in vista ultimate x64

Did you enable the IDE controller in the BIOS and install the drivers?

I am not sure about the ide controller, in the bios it recognizes the dvd drive as the master and i loaded the most up to date drivers from the internet. do i need to do more? and jet all the connections are tight and the jumper is in the master slot

Check your device manager. Does it see the drive?

yeah it recognizes the drive an says" the driver is working properly" you can also see the drive in "my computer" however when you load a dvd it just sits and reads it forever, when you try to open the drive to see the contents "my computer" freezes and the only way to make it un-freeze is to eject the dvd

Test the drive in another computer. Could be a bad drive. Put in your Microsoft Vista DVD and see if it reads it.

i tested the drive in my old computer and it works fine. when i was installing vista on my new computer i was trying to use this current dvd drive. during the installation it said ti install the current driver of the dvd drive. I could not install it because i did not have the disc, so that is when i used an old dvd drive to install vista. after it was installed i then put the new dvd drive back in and loaded the drivers from samsung's website. still nothing, and then i found the thread on microsoft's website about deleting the lower and upper filters so i removed the filters and still nothing.

How was it tested in the old machine ? ?
You need to try the following formats:
A data CD
A data DVD
A pre-recorded data CD
A pre-recorded data DVd
And the above with movie/music CD's DVD's.

it simply plugged the dvd drive into my old computer and tried running a dvd, it worked perfectly fine. also an audio cd loaded fine as well

I would double check to see if the IDE is enabled in BIOS. Also since you say the DVD drive is working on your old computer I doubt the drive is bad.

Do you have other drives on that channel? If so, check to see what's master and what's slave. The DVD drive should be slave if you have a hard drive installed on same channel. If possible, put the DVD drive on a seperate channel, and set to master, if this isn't possible, as stated earlier, make the DVD drive slave and the hard drive master. See what happens.

Right click the Secondary IDE controller listed in Device Manager and select Properties...
How is it reported ? ?
Although i don't think UDMA is the issue here.

i have two hard drives hooked into the mother board however that are both sata drives. so there is nothing else that is sharing the ide cable with my dvd drive. I have tested the dvd drive on every jumper setting and it does not work on any of them. at one point i was worried that my mother board was bad however, my old dvd drive from my other computer works fine on my new computer.....weird? yes totally.

Have you checked the jumper on the back of the DVD drive? Is it an ATA DVD drive, or SATA?

If it is ATA, and you are connecting 2 ATA devices on the same cabke, the jumper on the back must be set to Master in one device and to SLAVE on the other device or vice versa....not the same on both.

Then the jumper is ok.
Did you try another IDE cable? ?? just in case?
One possible thing now is that your IDE is set to RAID in BIOS by default.
Try entering BIOS and check your IDE settings. You have one IDE slot on this mobo, so look in BIOS for IDE Raid and/or other options. If it's RAID, set it to IDE.

i'll check that out, however is it wierd that another dvd drive will work on my new computer? I pulled an old dvd drive off of an old computer and it works perfectly fine in my new computer, without changing any settings in bios or vista

Do you have it on the wrong IDE cable. Hard drives need 80 pin. Most DVDs require 40 pin. I have seen this cause an issue. Also, how long is your IDE cable?

i'm not sure what pin it is however i am using the ide cable that came with my mother board. it says it is the cd-rom cable, should i try using the HD cable and see if it works?
