I am setup as a standard user. When I try to change anything I get the User Account Control message. It asks for an administrator password, but it is not allowing me to enter the password. I know the pass, but when I try to type it in, nothing happens.

The only thing I can think of is maybe you are typing the wrong pass or correct pass but typed wrongly? UAC passwords are case sensitive.
Boot in safe mode with networking and try to log in as built in Administrator with the pass you are typing on UAC, disable UAC until you have figured out what the prob is with Pass.

The problem is that at the UAC prompt to enter the password, the area to enter the password is not letting me do it.

You mean it is not accepting typed entry? Or it does but when you click OK nothing happens?

Meanwhile, to be able to do more tweakings, disable UAC. (only administrator user can do this). Once disabled, start checking volume for errors:
Double click computor > right click [C:] > Properties > Tools > Check Now (under error-checking heading) > check the two boxes >Start > Schedule Disk Check > OK. Reboot...do not touch PC. It will take forever. Do something else. Go to Time Square for the ball drop.
