Another little problem... Task bar goes invisible..

Ok so as I continue to use Vista I am running into a few minor problems along the way as I posted before, BUT:

My Task Bar just goes missing and all I can see is the Start button?

I reinstalled Vista the other day just because and it still does this and I have no idea why or how to fix it.


Drives me nuts. Only way to fix it short term is to restart and I hate doing that.

I hope you mean taskbar, right?

OK, try this: Drag arrow to the bottom of screen until taskbar reappears, then right click taskbar, then click properties. Under Taskbar tab, uncheck the box on Auto-hide the taskbar. click apply, then ok.

Sorry, but I don't think that CNY's suggestion will work. When Auto-hide the taskbar is checked, the start orb auto-hides along with the taskbar, with both reappearing together when required. I have been unable to replicate this problem of the start orb appearing on its own. I rather think you have got a corrupted file or files on your system. In addition to Dwarf's suggestion, you might want to run a through malware scan just to rule that out. Have you tried stopping explorer.exe and reinitializing it. Have you downloaded anything before this started happening? (toolbars, etc.)

Well I just reinstalled Vista like 2 days ago and has happened before as well.

Auto hide is not on.

Really odd... I was thinking this was a common problem since it happened after 2 installs of Vista...

If I change it to "auto hide" and turn it back off the task bar comes back.


This may work for a day or 2, but this problem always seems to come back for no reason whenever it feels like it.

It happended to me with XP. I solved it accidentally by booting in safe mode...and back to normal boot. (I might have done some blind tweakings while in safe mode...not sure).

And it happened to a friend, also with XP...and it was due to trojan malware (Vundo?)

Suggestions:
Boot in safe mode (what the heck...it won't harm) and back again in normal boot. See what happens.

Run anti-virus scan.

I had a similar problem where the taskbar dissapears.
In my situation I am using a Acer laptop and make use of an external monitor. When I remove the external monitor, the taskbar dissapears.
Acer laptops have a "Presentation" button. If I use the button to activate/deactivate the monitor, the taskbar "fixes itself".

1. Type regedit in run,

And expand h key local machine\software\Microsoft\windowsnt\currentverson\winlogon, in the right pane double click on shell, delete all the values and type explorer.exe there.

2. press ctrl+alt+esc, this key combination should bringback ur taskbar.

3. If u changed the dpi settings bring back into default settings.

Video Drivers? Uninstall/Reinstall, maybe try a different version.

Honestly,, I have never ever seen this on any system I have ever worked on.
So,, I have to think it is OS corruption, Hardware causing corruption, This is not a typical Windows problem that I have ever seen or read about. And I have worked on a whole lot of systems.

I have this problem also. It tends to happen after I resume my Dell Latitude D820 laptop after it has been suspended (sleep). The only thing that restores the taskbar for me is to click on "Switch user" and just log back in as myself.

I'm running Vista Ultimate SP1 32 bit.
